Vulcan wins in a thriller after a long gap

By: Frankel   November 29 , 2018

Adhiraj Raj Jodha trained Vulcan bounced back to winning ways after a longish wait of 322 days when the five-year-old held off the top-weighted Raees by the proverbial whisker in the 2000 metres Quasar Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Thursday`s Mumbai races. Jockey Sandesh drove out the lesser fancied Vulcan with all the resources at his command to snatch the verdict the final stride of the race.

Though there were just four runners, the race had a competitive look about it as three of them were well-matched. Super Sunshine who has developed the habit of getting left at the gates was a horse of immense potential but gone sour. Frivolous who enjoyed the pull in weights was made the favourite ahead of Raees and Vulcan. Jockey Yash Narredu took Frivolous on a start to finish mission. The favourite took a smart jump this out. Raees followed in the second position ahead of Vulcan while Super Sunshine lost all the chances at the gate itself.

Frivolous came into the straight ahead of the rest but the front-runner could not breathe easy as Raees was hot on his heels with Vulcan too making his bid on the outside. Inside the final furlong, it looked like it was going to be a three-horse finish but Frivolous slackened allowing Raees to go ahead marginally. Vulcan joined issue and with Sandesh at his aggressive best, the Jodha trainee got the nod on the post. Frivolous was third one and a half lengths behind the runner-up.

The1000 metres Shantidas Askuran Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, had a competitive look about it with many well-performed horses in the fray. The open nature of the race was indicated by the odds offered by the bookmakers which suggested that even they struggled to pinpoint any horse having a greater chance to win. About four horses were offered almost identical odds. Glyndebourne who had been beaten by some of the contestants in the race in their recent outings was made the favourite. In the event, the race was won by lesser fancied Wise Child from the stables of trainer M K Jadhav. Wise Child had struggled earlier in his career to find the winning post as he always found one better before crossing the line. This time out, in the hands of Sandesh, Wise Child came home with a big rush and overhauled the front-running Clymene who slackened after raising hopes. Longshot Charging Tigress finished on strongly to take the runner-up berth ahead of Clymene while Glyndebourne was fourth. Summer Rays who was also in betting consideration was squeezed out of the reckoning. Trevor was trying to get a run along the rails but when Wise Child breezed past him, he was forced to check his horse and drop out of contention.

Vinesh trained Juno`s Quest put it across favourite Outrageous in the 1200 metres Mayor`s Trophy, a race for three-year-olds with a lower rating. Juno`s Quest who was at nourishing odds led the field at the top of the straight and then skipped away beyond the reach of Outrageous who made a futile chase. Myrcella ran on to take the third position.

Jockey Leigh Roche drove out favourite Patriots Day to victory in the 1600 metres Grand Passion Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Patriots Day smoothly assumed command in the stretch and opened a big lead. Fancied Medici who stayed in touch with the favourite, flopped miserably under pressure. Emotionless produced a big effort and very nearly toppled the favourite who survived by the skin of his teeth in the bobbing of heads. Eiger`s Tiger saved place money.

Adhiraj Jodha trained Tasawwur had made a winning debut at Pune and he was strongly supported to record an encore in the 1800 metres M H Ahmedbhoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Sandesh had no problem in steering the favourite to an easy win, accounting for the Astral Flare in the stretch. Tar Heel came home with a powerful effort and edged past Astral Flare to snatch the runner-up berth close home.

Deepesh Narredu trained Awesome One was an impressive debut winner at Pune and he was strongly backed to win the 1400 metres Snow Dew Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Awesome readily justified the enthusiasm of his backers leaving the field stranded in the final 300 metres for an emphatic win. Awesome One can complete a hat-trick. Grand Tenton ran on to take the second position ahead of Admo. Madagascar who was in serious betting lost all his chances with a dismally slow jump from the gates.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Lesrel who had recorded a runaway win at Pune, maintained the good form with yet another impressive win in the 1200 metres Siachen Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Lesrel assumed command soon after turning for home and went beyond the reach of the rest. Safdar ran on from behind to take the second position ahead of Might Warrior. The lower division of the race saw Ridgewood Star from the stables of Dallas Todywalla show winning form after letting down on a number of occasions. Trevor rode him in check and the lesser fancied runner shot through the opening along the inside to storm clear of the rest. Rare Silver and Royal Ace occupied the next two slots. Favourite Wabi Sabi gave a dismal performance.
