Mauritania wins Turf Club Trophy with a record to boot

  November 30 , 2018

Padmanabhan trained Mauritania went at a scorching pace and had enough legs to sail past the post in the Gr 3 Bangalore Turf Club Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Friday`s races in a record time of one minute 9.94 seconds. Mauritania who had recorded two back to back wins at Mysore thus maintained his winning form and showed that the six-furlongs trip which was reckoned to be sharp by many did not pose any limitations on his performance.

Mauritania was offered at what could be considered as lucrative odds given the fact that Tutankhamun hadn`t displayed the form of old in his last few outings. Subah Ka Tara was making a quantum jump in terms of the quality of the opposition he was facing though he is currently the highest rated three-year-old at this centre and had also the scales in his favour.

David Allan took Mauritania on a start to finish mission and he dictated a clever pace. Siobhan, Tutankhamun raced in proximity while Accolade was eased in the fourth position ahead of Smile Stone while Subah Ka Tar found the pace too hot and trailed the field before catching up while approaching the final bend. Mauritania kicked on gamely though at one stage he looked vulnerable when Tutankhamun essayed a strong challenge. Like he had done in the past, under pressure, Mauritania could utilize the reserves that he commanded and pulled away to win by a length. Smile Stone came up with a patented late burst of speed to take the third position. Subah Ka Tara also ran on strongly to pip Accolade for the fourth position. Siobhan who chased Mauritania found that it was too taxing and finished several lengths adrift of the fourth-placed horse.

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Angelino who had recorded a smashing win in his maiden outing, was quoted at very cramped odds even though he was taking on seasoned horses in the 1600 metres Hoysala Salver, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Angelino had also incurred a significant penalty for his last win. Jockey Sandesh had Angelino take over the running within the first furlong and the progeny of Wing Legend led well into the straight. Approaching the final furlong, it was evident that Angelino was sending distress signals when Mr Handsome began to essay a strong challenge. Mr Handsome overhauled the favourite quite easily and won by a margin of two lengths. Angelino performed creditably but his classic aspirations suffered a setback as a result of this tame defeat because the winner who is also a three-year-old was conceding chunks of weight to him. Set To Win nosed out Setaglow to grab the third place.

Srinath drove out Prasanna Kumar trained Allsettogo to a narrow win in the 1400 metres Kodagu Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The favourite Touch of Class led into the final 100 metres but could not survive the sustained challenge essayed by Allsettogo. The latter stormed ahead but had to survive the strong late flourish of Piper Regina and Deepalika who was bidding for a hat-trick. Deepalika lost several lengths at the start despite which she came close to winning. Touch of Class weakened to disappear from the scene. Kishan Thomas trained Revan Star recorded an encore in the lower division of the race. Revan Star came into contention inside the final 100 metres and got past the front-running Birchwood and then held off the late flourish of Wild Wild Angels and San Bernardino.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Casey had run a forward race and made the best of it to win the 1600 metres Horanadu Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Ocean Park led well into the straight before Srinath drove Casey to get the better of the front-runner. Casey then went away for a comfortable win over Gold Mist who rallied late. There was a dead-heat for the third place with Ocean Park and Princess Rumela going past the post locked together.

Kishan Thomas had a double for the day through Revan Star and Nostradamus. The well-backed Nostradamus challenged the front-running Sheer Magic in the stretch and sailed ahead to record a comfortable win in the 1200 metres Ghataprabha Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Majestic Rajakumari essayed a strong challenge but her jockey Harish perhaps lost his rein momentarily and this put paid to her hopes of running the eventual winner close. Fierce Fighter was third.

Darius Byramji trained Fantastic App had the credentials to win the day`s opener, the 1100 metres Hebbe Falls Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Jockey Anthony Raj managed to get the desired response from the favourite close home to get the better of front-running Turf Magic. Kanthaka came up with a late bid to relegate Tudor Prince to the third position.
