Imtiaz Sait trained Caprisca demolished the opposition in the Gr 2 C N Wadia Gold Cup, a rich terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. The Indian St Leger winner Caprisca who had a good forward run last time out beat a listless opposition by assuming command inside the final furlong to record a decisive win.
Trainer Imtiaz Sait who ended up with a lucrative treble, however, was not at the venue as he had undergone an angioplasty last week. The veteran trainer from Bangalore who made Mumbai as his base recently had the distinction of saddling 2000 winners. Here`s Racingpulse wishing the trainer a speedy recovery and hoping to see him back in action in next week`s racing.
Mathaiyus who was once a rousing performer had suffered a setback and since then he has never been the same. Though he was subjected to systematic preparation with the benefit of mock races and a race run, it was always going to be a tough ask for him to bounce back to winning ways after 512 days. However, punters still believed that he could perform the magic and made him the favourite. Selfie Star led the field into the straight with B Fifty Two and Mathaiyus for the company while Sandesh chose to keep Caprisca relaxed in the rear. Mathaiyus steadily lost touch with the front-runners in the stretch and eventually finished a poor fourth. He reportedly came back sour. Caprisca who moved up with raking strides on the wide outside the moment Sandesh got into his act, devoured ground and stormed clear in the final furlong for an emphatic win by a widening margin of three lengths over Vulcan and B Fifty Two. Selfie Star had no gas left in her tank and ended up last.
Iron Age had always been a handy customer whenever he raced over a five-furlong trip. After being switched back to his pet trip in the K M Munshi Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 after a failed effort over an extended trip, Iron Age, in the hands of jockey Zervan led all the way and just about held on to win from a late-rallying Excellent Gold who found the winning post coming a wee bit soon. The Imtiaz Sait trainee was desperately hoping for the post to come when he began to slacken, and luck was on his side. Pokerface headed Beshiktash to get the third place. The latter was an impressive winner over six furlongs but over a furlong short, he was unable to repeat his performance.
Vishal Gaikwad trained Bateleur had flopped miserably in his last outing after a runaway win in his previous outing. Now racing over seven furlongs, Bateleur had strong support in the betting ring to resume his winning ways along with Eyes For You who was being switched back to a shorter trip after running over a mile and a half in the Oaks. Jockey Neeraj Rawal took Bateleur on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Western Aristocrat had no problem in staying clear of the rest to eventually win by a comfortable margin of over three lengths. Eyes For You flopped after giving a chase and even lost the runner-up berth to Grand Accord who made a late rally.
Imtiaz Sait trained Fleur Dy Lys had it easy in the 2000 metres Jayaramdas Patel Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan got the lesser fancied runner in a handy position before bringing the progeny of Arazan into strong contention with a furlong left in the race. Fleur Dy Lys pounced on the front-runners and surged ahead and easily held off the challenge of It`s A Deal. Favourite Brazos made no show and was a disappointing third.
Deepesh Narredu trained Kingsman regained his winning form after running fourth in a tough company when swamping the opposition in the 1600 metres Ronaldo Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan kept Kingsman in the rear till turning for home before getting aggressive. Kingsman covered the leeway swiftly and sailed past Western Front who was bidding for a hat-trick and recorded a comfortable win. Western Front held off Relentless Pursuit to save the second place.
Castilian from the stables of trainer Vishal Gaikwad had it easy in the 1200 metres Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Belenus who had a good forward run last time out was the strong fancy but the favourite who got bumped badly at the turn by Bait And Switch faded out of the reckoning. Bait And Switch had the lead going into the final furlong but Castilian who was making his debut easily collared the front-runner to record an impressive win. Mirabilis showed slight improvement when finishing third.
Trainer Karthik Ganapathy led in another long shot winner of the season when Pulverize, in the hands of apprentice jockey Vishal Bunde, led all the way and staved off the late bid of Ebony to win the 1200 metres Angelique Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Red Carnation was third. Two jockeys, both apprentices Ayyar on Bohemian and Shubham on Olly Boy had a fall. Who`syourdaddy suddenly shifted in front of Bohemian inside the final furlong and the latter clipped the horse resulting in the fall of Ayyar. Olly Boy was affected by the incident and its jockey Shubham too hit the turf.
