Punjabi Girl finds winning mark after longish break

  March 15 , 2019

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Punjabi Girl who had gone off the boil after winning the Gr 1 Fillies Championship Stakes during the summer season, finally found the winning mark after a disappointing campaign at Kolkata while winning the 1400 metres Kanteerava Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. After an indifferent run, jockey Trevor Patel too was in his elements, booting home a quadruple to take a decisive lead in the jockeys` championship stakes over Sandesh.

Though Punjabi Girl had performed poorly in the classics at Kolkata, the fact that she was running in a handicap race should have made her a firm favourite, but one was not sure what was the reason for her below-par efforts as she had not even finished second best. Possibly, the niggles that would have affected Punjabi Girl might have been attended to or simply she did not like the Kolkata track and was at happy to be back on the home track, one is not sure what could have contributed to her emphatic win. Lofty Thoughts who had reeled off three wins in handicap races also shared the betting in equal measure. But in the event, Lofty Thoughts who planted at the gates was completely out of the fray and finished a dismal last. Trevor who had Punjabi Girl switched off in the rear group, brought her with a lightning run in the final furlong and the progeny of Wind Legend zoomed past the front-running Surf Romance to record an easy win. Fire Glow saved place money. Punjabi Girl surely showed the zest of old but far she will progress from here can be known only during the summer season.

Sulaiman Attaollahi enjoyed a profitable day with a treble which also consolidated his position as the leading trainer of the centre. Apart from Punjabi Girl, he had winners through three-year-old Alexander Dumas and four-year-old Into The Groove. Alexander Dumas was well supported to win the 1400 metres Prince Ardent Salver ahead of Kirkwood and Port of Beauty who was running after a longish break after making an encouraging start to her career. Alexander Dream was not inclined to raise a fluent gallop and Trevor had to get aggressive on the progeny of Kingda Ka by using the whip well before the final turn. Alexander Dumas warmed up to the task midway through the stretch and pounced on Kirkwood and Port of Beauty who were disputing the issue. Alexander Dumas surged ahead and won with a measure of comfort from Port of Beauty who held off Kirkwood to snatch the runner-up position.

Into The Groove was seen on the race track after 176 days. The progeny of Excellent Art had suffered a sesamoid fracture while running in the Mysore 1000 Guineas and hence could run at long odds in the 1400 metes Hamavati Salver, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Into the Groove had a decent record having gone down by a whisker to Snowdon during the last summer season. Blue Moon was a strong favourite. Trevor had Into The Groove lead from the start and the lesser fancied runner skipped clear in the final furlong to record an easy win over Blue Moon who ran without posing any threat to the front-runner. Spiritous was a long way third.

Trevor`s fourth winner of the day came through lesser fancied Propine who easily held off the challenge of the opposition in the 1100 metres Brahmaputra Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Perfectgoldenera nosed out Mischief Flyer to get the runner-up berth. Soviet Union attracted disproportionate betting to close as an even-money favourite, but he was lost in the crowd all through the race.

Trainer Prithviraj was another who had a profitable day. No Opinion came in for spirited betting in the 1100 metres Karwar Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Jockey A R Pradeep took No Opinion on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Stern Opinion proved too good for the opposition while winning by a widening margin of six lengths in timing of one minute 6.63 second which was too good for this category. Cashmere necked out Consort Queen to get the second position. The lower division of the race was claimed by Imtiaz Khan trained Naayaab who got the nod in the dying moments of the race, necking out Premises Princess who held sway till she was overhauled. Kruger Park was another neck behind the runner-up. Future Bright who was well fancied to win was withdrawn at the gates on veterinary grounds. Rocket Punch and Aqua Blessing were the others who were also non-starters for similar reasons.

Trainer Prasanna Kumar had a poor day with two of his strong favourites biting the dust. Kvasir flopped miserably in the 1200 metres Becket Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The race was won by Parvati Byramji trained Madame Sultana who held sway from the word `go` and managed to survive the late onslaught of Tarini to win by a narrow margin. Reczai saved place money. The lower division of the race was won by Prithviraj trained last start winner Maybe Forever who in the hands of the improving apprentice Manish held on to win from Bold Move. Gold Mist was third.

Two the heavily supported horses from trainer Narayan Gowda who had the services of Sandesh failed miserably but Land of Liberty broke the maidens rank as a well-backed runner in the 1400 metres Kudremukh Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Land of Liberty quickened well with a furlong left in the race and provided jockey M Rajesh Kumar with a rare win. James Bond was some lengths behind in the second position while Yellow Zone managed to save place money.
