Trouvaille breaks the jinx in fourth attempt

By: Frankel   March 17 , 2019

Shiraz Sunderji trained Trouvaille who had come second best on three occasions albeit against formidable opponents, found his bearings when trouncing the opposition in the Gr 3 Shapoorji Pallonji Breeders` Juvenile Colts` Championship, a terms race for three-year-olds, the highlight of Sunday`s Mumbai races. Trouvaille was the overwhelming favourite after running a noteworthy second in the Poonawalla Multi-Million and the progeny of Surf Rider readily justified the optimism of his supporters.

Trouvaille was taking on a modest lot of horses with none giving an impression of being capable of thwarting the bid of the favourite who had the benefit of running against what is perceived to be the best of the three-year-olds that have been on view this season. Jockey Sandesh had Trouvaille race in a handy third or fourth position and the favourite asserted his superiority in the stretch by storming ahead with a furlong left in the race and winning by a margin of over four lengths. Bangalore challenger Southern Ruler who had finished several lengths behind Trouvaille when these two met last time out, reproduced the form of that run to take the second position ahead of Gallantry who was racing on the back of a debut win. Beemer who led well into the straight, weakened in the final furlong to end up fourth.

Hoshidar Daji trained Thailand was expected to benefit by the extended trip in the Gr 3 Forbes Breeders` Juvenile Championship, a terms race for three-year-olds and was given the status of being a favourite ahead of Kariega who had shown improvement with two forward efforts to her credit. Turaco did the job of pace-setting with Kariega racing keen in the third position while Thailand was kept in the rear position. Trevor Patel got the Vishal Gaikwad trainee to gain momentum with a ground-saving run along the rails and the progeny of Kingda Ka quickened well to storm clear of the rest inside the final 200 metres. Kariega won with a great deal of ease from Mishka`s Pride. Thailand who did not race on an even keel looked a beaten horse well before the race came to the boil and was a poor third.

Favourite Flying Visit from the stables of trainer Imtiaz Sait chased Minstrel Heights well into the straight before quickening to go clear of the field to win the 1400 metres J P Vazifdar Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 to justify the strong favouritism. Lorraine went in the chase but found the front-runner slipping away beyond the reach and had to settle for the second position. Arc Shine ran on to take the third position.

Pradeep Chouhan drove out Shiraz Sunderji trained Notting Hill to an upset win in the 1400 metres Racing World Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The fancied runners in the race Augustus Caesar, Sullivan and Articulate let down their supporters badly. August Caesar was held up for a clear run and by the time his jockey Neeraj Rawal could manipulate a clear run on the wide outside, Notting Hill had established a winning lead. Augustus Caesar closed with a rush only to lose by a narrow margin. Sullivan was third while Articulate, after being up with the pace, disappeared without a trace in the stretch.

Chouhan was also lucky on the fancied Transform in the day`s opener, the 1200 meters Lahinch Plate (Div II), a race for horses in the lowest category. Silver Cap in the hands of jockey Zervan had stolen a march in the final furlong and shaped to win but was beaten in the bobbing of heads by Transform. The latter finished on strongly even as the front-runner was slackening and the finish was desperately close. Wabi Sabi was third. The lower division of the race was won by S S Shah trained Xoxo. The long shot Xoxo seized the initiative inside the final 100 metres and was comfortably ahead of the battling trio who finished in close order for minor placings. Cracklin` Rosie, We Make The Rules and Golden Eclipse finished in a cluster in the order mentioned. Xoxo was the first win this season for veteran trainer Shah who has found winners hard to come by of late.

Suraj Narredu ridden Warrior Clan had a healthy lead for a long while in the stretch in the 1000 metres J Rustomji Soparivala Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds but inside the final 100 metes began to falter after shaping to win. Lesser fancied Daddy`s Pride flew home on the wide outside to get the better of first-timer Golden Quest while Warrior Clan weakened to finish third.
