Momentum maintains winning run

By: Frankel   March 21 , 2019

Pesi Shroff trained Momentum maintained his winning run with a resolute effort in the 2400 metres Radha Sigtia Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Thursday`s Mumbai racing. The victory of Momentum also halted the winning sequence of Bronx who was bidding to complete a hat-trick of wins.

Gloriosus who led from the start was inclined to run out and went wide before being brought back to race close to the rails, but it was clear that this antic had cost whatever chance the Imtiaz Sait trainee had. Jockey Neeraj Rawal who pushed Momentum to take over the running at the top of the straight looked vulnerable for a long while in the straight as Bronx essayed a strong challenge. However, Momentum pulled out that bit extra to win with a measure of comfort. The third-placed John Cabot was a distance behind the runner-up which itself indicated that the rest of the runners in the fray were completely outclassed.

In a tight finish, Altamash Ahmed trained Princess Annabel recorded a long shot win in the 1200 metres Jimmy Bharucha Trophy, a race for three-year-olds. Silver Flames who was well backed to have a decisive say was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey N S Parmar and the favourite held sway till the final moments of the race. There was a charge of horses from behind and Princess Annabel proved to be the best of the lot. Royal Crystal finished on strongly to get the runner-up berth ahead of Queens Gate who overcame a lethargic start to be a noteworthy third. Silver Flames weakened to finish a close fourth.

Sanjay Kolse trained Pablo who had been running decent races in good company, found a weak set in the 1200 meters K J K Irani Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Pablo had run in the higher category and as such, he found the opposition meek as he swamped the field to win with a measure of comfort from Bonafide who held sway in front before being relegated to the second position more than five lengths adrift. Tasch who had won in the lowest category found the switch to this category her undoing and was a well-beaten third.

Imtiaz Sait trained Harmony of the Sea who hadn`t won for 371 days found an opportunity to break the winless sequence in the 1400 metres Osman Chotani Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Harmony of the Sea warmed up to the task in the final furlong to sweep past the battling horses in the front which included favourite Paco Azul who was bidding for a hat-trick. Golden Eclipse edged out last start winner Fencing to get the second position. The latter took a slow jump from the gates and this effectively ruled out the chances of the six-year-old mare.

Narendra Lagad trained Red Carnation looked too good for the field in the 1000 meters Starry Eyes Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. The only question mark was whether the four-year-old would be raced with serious intent as the stable seems to have reserved almost all its horses for the Pune season. The flow of money suggested that Red Carnation indeed would race with serious intention and apprentice jockey Kaviraj had no problem in steering the favourite to a comfortable win. Stablemate Navigator was second ahead of Isinit.

Zadmal Singh trained Arrecife who had been running consistently recorded the first win of her career when she made the 13th start a winning one, staving off the challenge of Master of Studies and Whoopsidaisy in the 1600 meters Sion F Nessim Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Whoopsidaisy led from the start and had the initiative going into the final 50 metres. Arrecife who responded to the strong riding of Pradeep Chouhan managed to neck out the front-runner closer home. Master of Studies too finished with a rush to push the long-time leader to the third position putting his neck in front at the finish.
