Royal Sceptre records an upset win on final day

  March 23 , 2019

Neil Darashah trained Royal Sceptre brought the curtain down on the Bangalore Winter Season with an upset win in the 1600 metres Racing Patrons Trophy, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. The controversial racing season which saw the Stewards being caught repeatedly fumbling with their lack of understanding of the sport came to an end perhaps much to the relief of the beleaguered punters. It is a pity that we must endure the same set of Stewards for another reason before we can hope for a change.

Perhaps the physical niggles had kept Royal Sceptre out of racing action during the season and he had just one outing to his credit. Though he had commanded healthy respect as a youngster, the six-year-old was not reckoned to bounce back when horses like Mr Handsome, Courage and Magistero were in the fray and these three had a reasonable form to support their claims. The race was won for Royal Sceptre and lost for others as the progeny of Ace was allowed an uncontested lead of more than five lengths while the other serious competitors sat relaxed behind so much so that when the race came to the boil, they were left with no hope. In the hands of apprentice jockey Shamaz Shareef, Royal Sceptre kicked away to win by a margin of four lengths. Magistero nosed out Courage to get the runner-up berth. Prashanth Dhebe on Courage rode a poor race, conceding ground in the initial stages and then travelling wide and this robbed the horse of a certain second place.

Dhebe though enjoyed a good day, booting home a double. Neil Darashah trainee War Hero won the 1200 metres Malaprabha Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. After Baymax led deep into the straight, War Hero asserted his supremacy and stormed ahead. Favourite Castaway gave a chase but found the front-runner too good for comfort. Baymax held on to the third position.

Trainer Faraz Arshad had winners of both the divisions of the 1100 metres Ranganathittu Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Karadeniz who had the benefit of a race run was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the upper division of the race. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan took Karadeniz on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Charmo had the race sewn up a long way from home. Challenging Star staved off the challenge of Heavenly Angel to get the runner-up berth. In the lower division of the race, Exclusive Mandate recorded an equally emphatic win in the hands of jockey T S Jodha. After tracking Air Force One into the straight, Exclusive Mandate shook off his opponents to draw clear and win by a widening margin of three lengths. Slovenia, Air Force One and Genuine finished in a line in the order mentioned.

Lesser fancied Spirit Bruce managed to survive the late onslaught of favourite Velocidad to win the 1600 metres Katil Stakes, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Spirit Bruce came into strong contention inside the final furlong and got the better of Nitromax. Velocidad took time to warm up and came home with a rush only to find the verdict go against him by a frustratingly close margin. Nitromax necked out Moraine Gabriella to save place money.

Pradeep Chouhan was successful in steering the lesser fancied Shaktiman to victory in the 1200 metres Devarayanadurga Stakes (Div I), a race for horses rated 0 to 20. Racy Princess led well into the straight before surrendering the lead to Shaktiman who then took charge and steered clear of the rest. Ice Speed came up with a late rally to occupy the second position ahead of Glorious Days. So I Think who came in for spirited betting was not in the hunt thereby highlighting the dangers of backing such stables who continue to pull the wool over everyone with impunity. Azar Ali trained Aqua Blessing had no problem in winning the lower division of the race with a powerful surge with a furlong left in the race and getting the better of Kruger Park. Dallas was third.

Neil Darashah trained Camilla got the better of long-time leader Santiago close home to land the spoils as a well-backed horse in the concluding race of the season, the 1600 metres Byerley Turk Stakes, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Prashanth Dhebe drove out the favourite with a well-timed run to measure the front-runner. Proud Prince ran on strongly to save place money.
