Breeze of Spring, Super Kin, Hello Beauty, and More Than This appeal as bets on the last day of 2018-2019 Hong Kong season

By: Hong Kong Correspondent   July 14 , 2019

The curtains come down on the Hong Kong 2018-2019 season with an eleven race card. While Breeze of Spring, Super Kin, Hello Beauty, and More Than This appeal as bets, the odds on the first three may be lesser than they should be as these three will be ridden by Zac Purton. Zac`s mounts will be watched with even greater interests as he needs five winners to break Joao Moreira`s record of 170 winners in a season.

Hong Kong`s champion jockey will certainly get a disproportionate amount of money bet on his mounts especially if he has some early winners on the card and roll up money is added from the all ups.

The final race meeting for the Hong Kong 2018-2019 season may well turn into the “Zac Purton Masterclass Show”. Hong Kong`s champion jockey has a terrific book of rides with ten rides in the eleven race card. This correspondent has tipped six of these ten as his first choice.

Sha Tin races on Sunday July 14th, 2019

Our correspondent recommends the following four races as betting propositions.

Third Race - # 7) Breeze of Spring had begun only fairly in his last start when he shifted out and bumped another horse causing this Peter Ho trained three-year old to lose ground. In that run over the 1200 meters, he was momentarily awkwardly placed shortly after the start. When his jockey, Ben So, had put him under pressure, Breeze of Spring had drifted out several times under the whip in the last 300 meters. Breeze of Spring will certainly run an improved race with Zac Purton on Sunday. Telecom Rocket, who ran an improved race in his last start when he finished fourth to Bellagio over the same course and distance, will make this race competitive. All You Need, who had run with no cover for a majority of his last race and who is back up after just seven days, can improve. An interesting runner in this race is Blooming Spirit who this correspondent fancied in his last start. Blooming Spirit ran 10th 11 lengths behind. Perhaps that poor run could be chalked to Blooming Spirit not relishing the all weather track with an apprentice. Blooming Spirit is back on the turf track and is also re-united with Umberto Rispoli, who had ridden him in his last but one run where he had finished a very good fourth. Blooming Spirit has had several sharp gallops since his last start and also a barrier trial (with Umberto Rispoli in the saddle). Blooming Spirit is the one who can upset at decent odds.

Fourth Race - # 5) Super Kin ran second in his first run ahead of Marvelous World and Aquila, both of whom won subsequently. He will relish the step up to 1200 meters from 1000 meters and the fast pace that Bingo and Mehboob will set. Super Eighteen, Monkey Jewellery, and Mehboob are the three others with race form. Both Apollos Bow and Solar Victory make their debuts and both have trialed very well.

Seventh Race - # 1) Hello Beauty had almost dislodged Zac Purton in his first start in Hong Kong. Since then, this John Moore gelding has shown steady improvement with three different riders. Zac Purton is back in the saddle on Sunday and Hello Beauty is a live chance over the 1200 meter trip. Let`s Take It Easy, who may find the 1200 meter trip a bit short for his liking, can upset with Ben So astride. Aerohappiness, Reel Bizzy, and Ambitious Heart all have recent form to run good races.

Ninth Race - # 5) More Than This won all three of his starts in Great Britain before coming to Hong Kong this season. Since then, trainer Francis Lui has patiently prepared him for his owner Huang Kai Wen (who has another runner, Doctor Geoff, with a good chance on Sunday). More Than This was foaled in March 2016 at the Cheveley Park Stud in Great Britain. Northern Hemisphere horse running in a handicap race between 1st January and 31st July get a Weight for Age (WFA) allowance of 5 pounds. While the overall statistics for horses running with a WFA allowance do not look good (with only 7 winners coming out of the 182 WFA eligible horses that ran in the past four seasons), 6 of these 7 winners came from the smaller set of 35 runners that were at odds of 10 to 1 or less. More Than This, in all probability, will be 10 to 1 or less (especially from the roll up money if Doctor Geoff wins in the previous race) and his 5 pound WFA allowance coupled with apprentice jockey Alfred Chan`s 10-pound allowance makes More Than This an attractive contender, especially over the 1400 meter trip. Jolly Honour, who has shown better form over trips longer than 1400 meters, has won over 1400 meters in Newcastle in Australia and can upset at long odds. Good Beauty, Rickfield, and Young Legend will also run good races.

Here are the selections for the card

These selections are based on the Race Card available at the time of writing and do not factor in any standby horses that are promoted. While considering the tips above, please pay attention to the names of the horses – the number of a horse that is withdrawn will be assigned to the promoted standby horse.
