Awesome One too good in Turf Club Trophy

By: Frankel   August 11 , 2019

Deepesh Narredu trained Awesome One maintained the winning form by recording his third straight win in the Gr 3 Turf Club Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Pune races. Awesome One who was backed with conviction to record a hat-trick did so without coming under pressure from his opponents.

Governor General and St Andrews raced ahead with Awesome One and La Rondine racing behind in proximity while the others were spaced out behind. New England was in the rear as is his wont. Rounding the final turn, Suraj Narredu made his move on Awesome One who quickly asserted his supremacy overhauling the front-running St Andrews and went beyond the reach of the rest in the final furlong. La Rondine failed to find an extra gear. Perfect Star came from a long way back to get the second spot ahead of Turning Point while La Rondine filled up the frame. New England failed to display his patented late burst.

Incidentally, Awesome One had provided Deepesh with the first winner of his career. On that occasion, it was ridden by his brother Yash Narredu. This time out, Suraj Narredu who was riding for Deepesh for the time also made it a memorable occasion for his cousin by helping him achieve the first graded success of his career.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Lambretta recorded a comfortable win in the 1600 metres Kia Ora Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. The progeny of Dean`s Kitten was quoted at liberal odds as Retained Asset had more takers in the ring. Sandesh had Lambretta race a handy second behind pace-setter Gold Magic before pushing the lesser fancied runner to assume command in the stretch. Lambretta stretched away for an effortless win over Hi Ho Silver who was in the futile chase all the way in the straight. Tianjin Honey saved place money.

Properly Posh slammed the field in the 1200 metres Nelson River Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. God`s Decree led the field followed by favourite Monk and Properly Posh. Monk faded out of the reckoning on turning for home even as Properly Posh who was in a handy third position slipped through the gap between the front-runners and then sped away for a win by a widening margin of eight lengths in the final furlong. God`s Decree took the second spot while Monk just about managed to save place money with three horses finishing in a line. The lower division of the race was won by the heavily supported Enid Blyton who got up in time to get the better of debutant Questina. The Imtiaz Sait trainee Questina led by lengths going into the final furlong after taking over the running from Majestic Warrior in the stretch even as Enid Blyton was set alight on the wide outside by jockey Neeraj Rawal. Enid Blyton picked up speed with great resolution and managed to neck out the front-runner in the closing stride of the race. Majestic Warrior stayed on to take the third position. The wins of Properly Posh and Enid Blyton provided a quick double for the trainer and jockey combination of Altamash and Neeraj Rawal.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Bernice who was the firm favourite played up a lot while being stalled, holding up the proceedings as well as spending a lot of nervous energy in the 1400 metres Moosa M Hoosein Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 and this perhaps had a bearing on her performance. Timeless Deeds who had the benefit of an easy run last time out raced aggressively in front and skipped away in the stretch from Findlerhof who was in hot pursuit and recorded an easy win. Bernice finished fourth and it was clear all the way in the stretch that she was not going to be effective.

Trainer Altamash and jockey Neeraj Rawal combination won the third race of the day when Augustus Caesar had it easy in the 1400 metres Hurricane Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. The odds drifted out on Castilian and the favourite ran like a dud. Augustus Caesar who was a failed favourite and the subject of an enquiry was kept in a handy position till turning for home. August Caesar quickly seized the initiative and went away to win by a widening margin of seven lengths. Notting Hill who had beaten Augustus Caesar on the last occasion was faraway second nosing out Bunting to get this position.
