Corfe Castle asserts supremacy in Governor`s Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   August 18 , 2019

Leo D`Silva trained Corfe Castle tackled the opposition in the 1600 Governor`s Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races like a giant and recorded a runaway win. Jockey Akshay Kumar who was back in his elements guided the local champion. Racing ran kindly for the chasers of the favourites.

Corfe Castle had two unproductive outings at Bangalore against superior quality horses. Now against modest local horses against whom he had always asserted his supremacy barring an occasional hiccup, Corfe Castle perhaps was offered at good odds. Phenomenal Cruise set a decent pace which allowed the favourite to be settled behind in the second position while the rest were all spaced out. Akshay Kumar got busy on the favourite inside the final two furlongs and the favourite cruised past the front-runner without an aggressive effort on the part of the jockey. Corfe Castle then skipped ahead for a comfortable win. Like Wise was third.

Laxman Singh trained Isabella was stretched to the hilt by Classic Remark before asserting his supremacy in the 1200 metres Basalat Jah Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. Apprentice jockey Gaurav Singh took the speedy Classic Remark on a start to finish mission. The front-runner did not give up easily when Isabella came up with a strong challenge. Suraj Narredu had to drive out Isabella to get the better of the lesser fancied runner which she did in the waning yards of the race. Trump Girl was a long way third.

Prasad Raju trained Flamingo Fame received one-sided support in the betting ring to win the1200 metres Deccan Queen Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. The favourite took a while to get the better of front-running Carmella and she did so in the final furlong. However, the favourite was hard-pressed to hold the lead as Alliston came up with a spirited bid which went in vain as the winning post came to the rescue of Flaming Fame. Akshay Kumar had to fully ride out the favourite to get the desired result. Ayur Shakti showed intent while finishing third. Vittal Deshmukh trained Moskova who was the second favourite failed to show any improvement and finished in the ruck. Vittal`s horses are not showing consistency like before and this has been the trend often.

Laxman Singh trained Mozambique recorded an encore in the 1200 metres C R Bhoopal Memorial Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65, without facing any stiff opposition. After Arc of History led till halfway through the stretch, Akshay Kumar eased the grip on Mozambique who easily tackled the front-runner and went away for an easy win. Warrior Supreme ran on to take the second position many lengths behind. The lower division of the race produced an exciting finish with long shot News O Star coming from a long way back after being outpaced in the early part to edge out favourite Marina Del Rey on the post. Gorgeous Lady led from the start and put up a dogged resistance when Marina Del Rey came up with a big challenge. Even as these Marina Del Rey was getting better, apprentice jockey Gaurav Singh brought News O Star with a big effort and the Ravinder Singh trainee managed to pull it off in the final stride of the race. Gorgeous Lady stayed on to take the third position. News O Star had finished about 14 lengths behind the winner over an extended trip of seven furlongs after winning over the present trip which was difficult to understand whatever the explanation.

Satyanarayana trained Freedom Fire who had several niggles which had prevented him from winning, finally made it in his ninth outing, claiming the 1200 metres Manchiryala Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25, with a start to finish dash. Apprentice jockey Rohit Kumar had no hesitation in taking Freedom Fire to the front and the progeny of Excellent Art had the race in control all the way in the straight. Desis Dream managed to stave off Rhine who made a big rally from way back by a nose to get the runner-up berth. Moka whose last run had seen him finish more than 25 lengths behind the winner albeit over an eight-furlong trip was surprisingly made the favourite. For the record, Moka was always in hopeless pursuit.
