Marinetti prevails in Sudhakar Reddy Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   October 8 , 2019

Laxman Singh trained Marinetti who had twice run below par won the 1400 metres G Sudhakar Reddy Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the feature event of Tuesday`s Hyderabad races in a close finish from Pontius Pilate. Quite a few upsets marred the day for the chasers of favourites. Suraj Narredu had a rich haul.

All the horses of Laxman Singh which had performed poorly as fancied runners and had been the subject matter of enquiries have all been seen in different colours in their subsequent outings. Marinetti had performed poorly as a favourite and on that occasion, the jockey was Akshay Kumar who had explained that he had made his best efforts to be up with the pace but he could not do so and then he was interfered which affected the performance of the favourite. In the next outing, Marinetti was well positioned but performed poorly in the end. Now entrusted to apprentice jockey Gopal Singh, Marinetti made swift progress in the stretch to go storming ahead in the final furlong and then held off the rally made by Pontius Pilate along the rails. News O Star who raced up with the pace took the third position despite drifting out in the final stages of the race. The first three finishers were all ridden by five-kg claimers and the jockeys were not permitted to carry the whip in this race.

Hilton Sequeira trained British Empress was in a spot of bother being held up between Magnetosphere and Star of Tiara but once jockey Akshay Kumar pulled her out to get a clear run, the favourite devoured ground and easily measured Star of Tiara who was shaping a like a winner to win the 1800 metres Sircilla Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. British Empress had been an impressive winner of her last outing but the fact that she had bled was the reason why she was seen in action after a break of 64 days despite which she won the race fluently against Star of Tiara who is yet to break the maiden`s rank in 10 outings. Magnetosphere held off Mr Shanghai to save the third place but returned bleeding from both nostrils.

The 1200 metres Adilabad Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25 threw a confusing picture with Ravinder Singh trained Withrosemakeup whose last win was 680 days ago being backed as a strong favourite. The odds on Suraj Narredu trained Tammana drifted out in the betting ring. One has rarely seen a Ravinder Singh horse win as a favourite and so it proved when Withrosemakeup was under pressure inside the final furlong and was a beaten cause well before the race came to the boil. Tammana who had also not won for over 580 days tackled Negress Princess in the final furlong and despite drifting out of a straight course provided Suraj with the second back to back success of the day.

Sequeira trained Joe Malone was the firm favourite to win the 1400 metres Suryapet Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Akshay Kumar rushed Joe Malone on the wide outside to be in striking position early in the stretch. Joe Malone hit the front approaching the final furlong but it was clear that her lead was only on sufferance as Miss Marvellous who unleashed a powerful run in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu stormed clear in the final stages of the race to win by a comfortable margin of over three lengths. Tiger of the Sea charged late to edge past Unstoppable to snatch the runner-up berth. Joe Malone weakened to finish a tame fourth.

The form has very little substance in Hyderabad because all kinds of aberrations are accepted because one rarely sees professionals being pulled up for in and out running. Sreekant trained Gladstone who had finished 16 lengths behind in his last outing was the medium of a quiet touch in the Kitty Bank Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Gladstone which had not won for 597 days was seen in earnest in the hands of Bangalore based jockey Irvan Singh as he chased pace-setter Baywatch Babe well into the straight before taking charge in the final furlong. Mahira finished on strongly and managed to get the second position from favourite Sublime. Last start impressive winner Moka was never in the hunt, not getting a good beginning.

Prasad Raju trained Marvel Princess had been well prepared for a big touch in the 1200 metres Kitty Bank Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. However, the odds did not crash as most people were expecting it. Instead, NRI Striker came in for solid support to end up as a firm favourite. Suraj took Marvel Princess to the front and drove out great commitment to ensuring that the fancied runner had enough lead to contain the late challenge of last start winner Handsome Duo. His Excellency got the third position ahead of favourite NRI Striker. This was the fourth winner recorded by Suraj for the day.
Donald Netto trained Palsy Walsy recorded an easy win in the Division III of the Kitty Bank Plate. The well-backed Palsy Walsy was kept in a handy second position by Suraj Narredu as NRI Striker set the pace. Tokyo Jam who has often been unpredictable despite having won her last outing in record time was kept in the third position. Palsy Walsy smoothly took over the running inside the final two furlongs and sped away for an easy win over Tokyo Jam who was hard ridden but failed to produce a big effort. Tokyo Jam barely managed to keep the second position from Barnabas.
