Juliette announces her arrival on the classic scene

By: Frankel   December 1 , 2019

Karthik Ganapathy trained Juliette heralded her arrival on the classic win with an emphatic win over two highly-rated horses in Sultan Suleiman and Alexei to win the 1400 metres Maharaja of Morvi Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. Juliette who was a fair performer during the last Mumba season was running for the first time after a break of 284 days and showed vast improvement from her first season performance.

Sultan Suleiman who had accounted for Trouville during the Pune season was widely expected to win the feature event though the hype enjoyed by Alexei resulted in his odds shooting up. Juliette had accounted for Victorious Sermon during the last Mumbai season and had finished 2.8 lengths behind Missing You in the Poonawalla Multi-Million. The trainer was quietly confident that he had a classy horse in his yard though his excitement may not have reflected in the betting ring which showed Juliette being quoted at 15 to 1. Juliette was handicapped by lack of a race run beside the jockey carrying 3.5 kgs overweight on the filly.

Trevor Patel took Alexei on a start to finish mission with Sultan Suleiman in the chase while Juliette was relaxed in about the fifth position. Alexei battled on gamely in the stretch but going into the final furlong, looked vulnerable as Juliette made rapid strides along the rails in the hands of Irish jockey Colm Donoghue. Sultan Suleiman was taking time to warm up. Juliette showed tremendous acceleration to easily collar Alexei close home and win with a measure of comfort. Sultan Suleiman managed to get past Alexei in the closing strides of the race. Juliette should be a strong contender for the Indian 1000 Guineas on the evidence of this win.

Adhiraj Jodha trained Tasawwur overwhelmed Valegro in the final 50 metres to record an encore in the 1600 metres Sir Rahimtoola Chinoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Valegro led in earnest from the beginning with favourite Tasawwur in the chase. Valegro opened what looked a winning lead inside the final furlong but Tasawwur closed with a rush to measure the front-runner in the final moments of the race. Truly Epic ran on to take the third position.

Mirabilis from the stables of trainer Pesi Shroff obliged expectations in the 1400 metres DMCC Centenary Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 easily tackling the opposition. Star Comrade attempted runaway tactics but in the stretch was overhauled by Mozart with Golden Hind in hot pursuit. Mirabilis had many lengths to cover on the front bunch as she was placed in the rear but the favourite produced a striking acceleration in the final furlong to squeeze through between Mozart and Golden Hind to provide the second win of the day for visiting jockey Leigh Roche. Golden Hind necked out Mozart to take the second position.

Narendra Lagad trained En Sabah Nur who had the best racing form was surprisingly offered at good odds as the major betting was attracted by Imtiaz Sait trained Seniority who had the benefit of a modest run to his credit in the 1200 metres Gateway of India Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. After Bonafide led the field into the straight, En Sabah Nur easily tackled Seniority and sped clear to win the race competently. Seniority faded out under pressure. It was Titanium who showed some spark when giving a chase to the eventual winner. Warrior Clan ran on to take the third position.

Pesi Shroff trained Nekhbet overcame her poor effort in her last outing at Pune and showed good improvement when staving off the challenge of Shae to win the 1600 metres Desert Lightning Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey Leigh Roche kept Nekhbet a handy second as Ithaca did the pacesetting followed by Medici and Shae while favourite Moriesiki who did not take a brisk start sticking to the rear. Roche got busy on Nekhbet turning for home and the fancied runner overhauled the front-runner and charged home. Medici gave a chase but faltered close home while Shae ran on strongly to take the second position. Moriesiki had conceded too much ground to the eventual winner for the colt to have any realistic chance and could only fill up the frame taking the fourth position.

Jockey Dashrath Singh booted home lesser fancied Godsword who held off the late challenge of Majestical to land the spoils in the 1000 metres Tiger Tops Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Godsword had the credentials to win but the money came pouring on Multibagger who was running after a gap of 98 days. Multibagger had the first run on her opponents but bucked under pressure as Godsword gained the upper hand midway through the stretch and stormed ahead. Be Frank was third while Multibagger performed disappointingly. Grand Sinatra was withdrawn at the gates.
