Perpetual Winning gets verdict in Stewards’ room

By: Goldie Boy   January 11 , 2020

Trainer Javed Khan`s horse Perpetual Winning (Imran Chisty-up) won the 1,200m Madras Race Club Cup, Saturday`s feature event, in the stewards` room. It was thanks to the Vijay Singh`s favourite, Lesrel (Hindu Singh) interfering with Shafiq Khan`s runner, Brainstorm (Dhanu Deora), in the final stages of the race, resulting in the third-placed aggrieved horse, objecting against the original winner, Lesrel, for the benefit of Perpetual Winning`s default victory. Early in the afternoon, Javed`s had saddled hot favourite, another of Chisty`s ride, Dancing Lord, to an easy victory. Trainer Bharath Singh, too, was among winners through his brace of winners, Lumenac (app Sujit Paswan) and Santana (Dashrath Singh). Tajeshwar, in fact, rode three winners in the seven-event card.

Originally, Perpetual Winning had placed behind Vijay Singh`s 6/4 favourite, Lesrel (Hindu) but an objection, lodged by the third horse, (Brainstorm (Dhanu Deora) against Lesrel was upheld, and placings were revised favouring the 5/1 shot, Perpetual Winning. Brainstrom, too was promoted to the second slot while Lesrel was demoted to the third position. In fact, Brainstorm was travelling in a threatening manner, close to the inner rails when Leasel squeezed the aggrieved horse, who, incidentally, also stepped into a pot hole, nearly unseating Deora. Stewards may have also considered the pot-hole matter as incidental but the interference and the squeezing had much to do for stewards to switch placings.

Dancing Lord`s victory, in the 1,500m Goodfellas Handicap, was simply emphatic for Javed`s runner. The 9/10 favourite allowed Bharath`s Bojangle (B.L. Paswan to lead a merry dance till into the home straight before pouncing on the leader for an easy win. The tiring leader also lost his second slot to the top-weight runner but late finishing runner.

Half-an-hour later, Vijay`s Abhay Gama (Suraj) made a mockery of the field in the Surray Handicap. Allowing the early leaders, Eastern Crown (App Paswan) and Bang Bang (Nikhil Naidu) to call shots till 300m from home, Abhay Gama was sent into the lead to score without much of an effort.

The Bookmakers` Association Cup was an easy start-to-affair for Bharath`s Santana, ridden by Dashrah Singh. The Declaration of War colt never allowed Vijay`s hot-favourite, Waytogo (Suraj) come close from the start and also at any stage of the race.

Vijay`s another hot-favourite, Ruby Cube (Suraj), too, in the 1,200m Robin Hood Handicap, was no match for Bharath`s Lumenac (app Paswan) who was ridden in a check behind Dil Mangey More, Coup De Grace and Eastside till about the final furlong. The winner brought with a late run to take the measure of the tiring, Coup De Grace and the other early leaders in a no-whip race.

The two lower Classes events, the opener, Adelta Handicap and the concluding event, the Fire Flash Handicap are hardly worth mentioning during the Derby weekend but for the records Daniel David`s Prince Of Hearts and Shafiq Khan`s well-backed Yutaka were beneficiaries – both in hands of apprentice P. Tajeshwar.
