Handicapper in Bangalore needs serious training

  November 17 , 2020

The Bangalore Turf Club mandarins have been making a series of mistakes, with the members of the committee being totally ignorant of the importance of the people that they should employ for key positions.

After getting rid of experienced people from important positions for frivolous reasons, the club is taking a risk with inexperienced people. BTC appointed a trainee handicapper who had much less experience than their own assistant handicapper to the key position. The results are there for all to see.

The Managing Committee members don`t believe that they are ignorant. And they don`t make efforts to improve. All that they are capable of is disruptive action. Ignorance is bliss but quite often ignorance is also destiny.

Over a period of time, the handicapping system in India has been a well-established one. The previous handicapper Shiva Prasad who held the post in BTC for a long time was also instrumental in training most of the handicappers working in other racing centres. Handicapping is not a simple mathematical exercise. Understanding of racing is very essential plus a deep understanding of the practices of the past for guidance.

One doesn`t know how well qualified is the Bangalore handicapper who was working as an assistant to Dr Jagannath who is the Secretary cum Handicapper of Mysore Race Course. In fact, when Jagannath was in South Africa attending Asian Racing Conference earlier this year, the club sought the help of BTC`s assistant handicapper Shyam to manage the operations even though Karthik who is the handicapper in BTC was working at Mysore. This perhaps gives a clue to how seriously our mandarins work. It needs an explanation as to why BTC chose to go with Karthik who was an inexperienced assistant handicapper at Mysore as contrasted with Shyam who had worked under BTC handicapper Shiva Prasad for a long period of time?

It has already been pointed out by many how the handicapper dropped Point To Prove to 102 after it had been handicapped at 114 at Mysore after the second-placed effort in the Stayers Cup at Mysore. The handicapper has a right to reassess the handicap of a horse but nobody revises the same without the horse having run in another race after its rating had been published.

The mistakes are continuing to happen. The BTC is not taking the help of a senior handicapper of another centre to help out as they have done in the case of stewarding of races. Ravi Shankar is fairly experienced to manage the show himself but the club is bringing RWITC Chief Stipendiary Steward Sujat Hussain at considerable experience each race day. Why didn`t they think of the same exercise as far as handicapper was concerned? The handicapper they have appointed is totally raw and his inexperience would only make him susceptible to pressure.

Miss Pareil won the 1400 metres Rajyotsava Cup, a terms race for three-year-olds on Saturday. Watchmystars and Ansaldo finished half a length and neck behind respectively behind the winner. Lagarde who was rated at 42 finished down the field and the handicapper was right in ignoring the poor run of the purpose of giving the rating for the first three placed horses.

If he had based the third horse for rating Miss Pareil, he should have given the filly the rating of 34 as Ansaldo who is a colt was already rated 32. This perhaps was what one can make out from years of observing how the handicappers did their rating. However, the BTC handicapper has given a rating of 27 which is very advantageous for the progressive filly to win again while being disadvantageous for those loitering in that weight unable to step out of the rating. The handicapper has given a rating of 24 to Watchmystars while retaining the rating of Ansaldo at 32. When these horses run together in a handicap race, Ansaldo will be giving weight to Miss Pareil who has beaten the former and run almost at the same weight difference. Is this not an absurd situation?

Sorry state of affairs at BTC. The committee along with the decision of retaining the present handicapper should also give a thought. But the committee continues to ignore.

Ansaldo was giving 5.5 kg to the winner and runner up, finished 3rd neck behind. Now giving 4 kg. For a neck verdict 1.5 kg penalty

Miss Pareil was level with Watchmystars. For a half length verdict now giving 1.5 kg to the runner up.

Seems perfectly fine. No?

Instead of entrusting the job of handicapping to one person, it is better to have a handicapping committee of two or more members like it is practised in foreign countries. Individual prejudices and mistakes should not mar racing. We need to progress with the times.

I agree with you sir. For Handicapping using logic is also very important. I still fail to understand how Trafalgar, who was rated 74 at the beginning of the season is now rated 120 after running 7th on the first day.

The new handicapper is a newcomer who should be given a chance to settle down and prove himself worthy of his position. Penalising horses in a way that their career was to win 3-4 races under BTC rules was prevalent under the old regime. Ansaldo carried 57kgs at a rating of 32 (unchanged now) and Miss Pareil carried 51.5 (rating now at 27). If they run together in a handicap race, Ansaldo carries 58.5kgs and Miss Pareil 56 kgs. Yes, Watchmystars could have been given another point or two.

Admin: Please confine to the issue on hand. Pointing out flaws is the way to correct. It is like taking treatment for a problem. If the problem is not pointed out or identified, it will fester into a more serious problem. Our job is not to please anyone. Tell things as they are in the hope they act as correctives. Like it or lump it.

Dear Mr. Sharan,
Seen for the first time that a 22 rated horse beat 32 rated horse and is penalised 2.5 kgs ie rated 27.
Take the example of cavallini who after 4/5 attempts is a maiden and is presently rated 40.
You have mentioned Ansaldo is a colt, while handicapping is it considered that winner or the beaten horse is of which gender ?

Admin: There is always a gender allowance of 1.5 kgs between a colt and a filly.

Admin: Your post was not relevant as the issue is about handicapping.

This has reference to the rating sheets as published on your website on the issue of rating of horses belonging especially Mr Arjun Manglorkar, Padmanabhan and Atthoholai which is nothing but a nepotism and clearly establishes the deceitful intention of Handicapper Mr Kharthik. This dishonest intention amounts to wrong wagering by the innocent public of the society who come to bet who are ultimately the major financiers of the club’s in managing the organization. These kind of person who are not only incompetent but also lacking ability of a racing official are only very harmful to the sport in general and will cause great repercussions ultimately leading to defaming and showing the club in poor light in the eyes of Public, Government Authorities and other clubs too. Wrong horses are becoming favourites and this is useful to have negative betting and ultimately the public money is going down in drain. He has no idea of the difference between the Handicap race and terms race and especially 3yr olds who are yet to show potential.
It is shocking that the Mysore Derby Winner SOUTHER RULER in its last outing on 7.11.2020 placed 6th which carried a overweight of 2 kgs that is 4 points, after the race it was dropped 2 points, therefore it has been dropped 6 points and in terms of kgs it is 3 kgs and thattoo in its first run after a long layoff. There are many such horses of this nature where over weights are not considered at all.
The worst rating is adopted in The Royal Calcutta Turf Club where Miss Pareil is penalized 2.5 kgs for a winner of ½ length which is beaten a winner.
He has no knowledge of either the rules or the job which he has been appointed which is one of the crucial arm of the genuine racing. The worst is he has dropped many horses rating after they ran in races after long layoff which itself defies the basic principle of Handicapping.
Kindly change this person as he has no knowledge and when one trainer made some enquiries he openly says that he does not understand fully and experimenting it and when asked about the terms race, he claimed ignorance and adopting the method of HIT and TRAIL method.
And finally and last but the important factor of the four pillars of sound handicapping – speed, pace, track bias and value – on which a foundation of successful horse race betting is based, does this fellow have any clue on these four pillars and more imporatantly do the stewards have any knowledge how much damage they are inflicting on the game.
