Augustus Caesar upsets in Turf Club Trophy

  November 21 , 2020

Alamash Ahmed trained August Caesar upset the field in the 1200 metres Gr 3 Bangalore Turf Club Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Bangalore races held on Saturday. Multifaceted once again let down expectations with a disappointing performance. Barring the two favourites trained by Padmanabhan and one by Sulaiman Attaollahi, punters came a cropper in other races.

Multifaceted had performed brilliantly the last winner season and had let down as a strong favourite in the Sprinters Cup at Mysore but redeeming himself with a fluent win in the seven-furlong race the next day. His run earlier in the season was rather disappointing though one could make an excuse that his best performance had come in six furlongs on the local track. His trackwork too suggested that he would bounce back and accordingly went to the post as a short-priced favourite. The few punters who dared to back the horse at such a price were in for a shock. Multifaceted had no legs in the final furlong as he gave up the moment he was challenged. Multifaceted finished second last while the other horse expected to give a good performance Saint Petersburg finished last.

Multifaceted was taken on a start to finish mission by Suraj Narredu. The favourite was forced to go at a good clip as Knotty Ash and Areca Legend were putting pressure and this perhaps told on the performance of Multifaceted who weakened going into the final furlong. Augustus Caesar who was tailed off last made good use of the misery of those who went at a scorching pace in front and produced a powerful run from way off the pace to pounce on the front-runners to record an easy win. Dream Catcher ran on strongly to take the second place ahead of Knotty Ash who barely managed to keep the third position from Psychic Warrior. Barring Knotty Ash, the others who were at the helm were undone by the lack of tactical acumen of those guiding them.

Padmanabhan trained Golden Oaks who is a classic hopeful trounced the opposition in taking style in the 1200 metres Chikkaballapur Plate, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Trevor Patel who had a profitable day booting home three winners, kept Golden Oaks in about the fourth position as the speedy Abira attempted to win with front-running tactics. Golden Oaks covered ground in the home stretch with big strides and cruised past Abira to win by a widening margin of four lengths in a faster timing than that clocked by the horses competing in the Group 3 race. Golden Oaks clocked one minute 12.27 seconds. Golden Oaks will be a strong contender for the 2000 Guineas. If he is able to carry his brilliance to the mile-long trip, he will be hard to beat.

Last year`s Bangalore Derby winner Well Connected from the stables of trainer Padmanabhan was another to oblige as a fancied runner in the 1600 metres Hoysala Salver, a race for horses rated 60 and above. The light framed progeny of Arazan appeared to have put on more weight with the long break perhaps helping her to get back to her wonted form. Jockey Trevor Patel kept Well Connected in about the fifth position as Velocidad did the job of pace-setting with Electra in proximity. Teno Sho who had come back after his exploits during the last winter season where he had beaten the likes of Trafalgar over a mile was kept in the rear of the group as the progeny of Phoenix Power loves to be held up before being unleashed in the stretch. Trevor made his move on Well Connected approaching the final bend and got the desired response from the filly who steadily gained ground on those in front and spurted ahead in the final furlong. Teno Sho moved rapidly from behind and finished with a rush only to find Well Connected reaching the safety of the winning post. Electra stayed on to take the third position.

Suraj Narredu who had a good day at Hyderabad on Thursday failed to win a single race and lost on both the horses which ran as overwhelming favourites. Secret Source was touted as a certainty in the 1400 metres World Television Day Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Long shot Realia led from the start and skipped away in the final furlong to win comfortably from In A Breeze and Arabian Phoenix. Secret Source who stayed in touch till the final furlong disappeared from contention with a dismal performance. This was trainer Prasanna Kumar`s first of the two winners of the day, the other coming through another long priced winner Astral Force.

Astral Force who hadn`t won for more than three years produced a winning performance in the 1600 metres Lal Bagh Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Sea of Cortez led the field well into the straight and weakened. Astral Force who in the chase stormed ahead and established a winning lead by the time High Priestess began to make her bid. Astral Force spared three lengths at the finish while favourite High Priestess could only edge out Whizzo for the second spot.

Sulaiman Attaollahi got some relief as the heavily backed Bellator had no problem in sparing a daylight between himself and the rest in the 1400 metres November Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Bellator who had impressed in a mock race proved vastly superior to the opposition storming ahead on turning for home and won by a widening margin of seven lengths. Sun Splash nosed out Happy Dancing to get the runner-up berth. Azhar Ali trained Sadaqat cantered home in the lower division of the race at big odds. Jockey Aashad Asbar brought Sadaqat into contention from a way of the pace and the progeny of Burden of Proof cruised past Amalfi Sunirse to record a ridiculously easy win. Dream Chaser held off Star Hopper to save place money.

Irfan Ghatala trained long shot Bloom Buddy shot through the gap between Morganite and Jokshan in the dying moments of the race to snatch the verdict in a thrilling fashion in the 1200 metres Manipal Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jokshan had the first run on his opponents as he shot ahead in the final furlong and enjoyed a useful lead. Morganite on the wide outside and Bloom buddy in the middle finished with big efforts. Bloom Beauty was successful in putting her head in front at the post.
