Ashwa Bravo swamps opposition in Guineas

By: Tippu Sultan   January 18 , 2021

In yet another case of a horse running way below potential and then regaining the form of old, Srinivas Reddy trained Ashwa Bravo trounced the opposition in the Gr 2 HRC Golconda 2000 Guineas, the second classic of the season, with the ease of a champion at Malakpet on Monday. Ashwa Bravo had run a listless race at Chennai, racing keen and had finished a disappointing fourth.

The poor performance of Ashwa Bravo perhaps was the reason why the colt who was hailed as the best horse in training on the local circuit running at good odds, with the favouritism being shared by Forever Splendour. Jockey Suraj Narredu did not have any problem in settling Ashwa Bravo in the third position unlike on the last occasion when the horse fought for his head. After Hidden Hope set a fast pace and expended his energy, Ashwa Bravo moved rapidly from the top of the straight and bounced clear in no time to win by a widening margin of three lengths over the late rallying Tigrio. Bellator took the third position narrowly failing to snatch the runner-up berth from the Mumbai challenger. The rest of the runners did not measure up.

Srinivas Reddy also led in the winner of the 1200 metres Taramati Plate, a race for horses 60 and 85 where Classic Remark who was running after a break of 55 days, led all the way and had enough legs to last out the trip from fast-finishing Agni and Pontius Pilate. Strategist who was bidding for a hat-trick was never in the hunt. Classic Remark had good credentials but the betting trend did not suggest such that belief.

Hilton Sequeira trained Peaky Blinders put behind the below par performance with a resolute performance in the 1600 metres Silky Baby Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Peaky Blinders got the better of Rhythm Selection in the final furlong and surged ahead. Peaky Blinders just about lasted out to withstand the late onslaught of favourite Kesariya Balam. Rhythm Selection stayed on to take the third position.

Akshay Kumar who had a profitable day booting home four winners guided Falcon Edge to a comfortable win over Ashwa Raudee in the 1200 metres Global Stud Million, a race for three-year-olds. Falcon Edge shook off Ashwa Raudee in the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort. Proud was third. Ashwa Jauhar who was always in the betting ran a disappointing race, finishing down the field.

Donald Netto trained Lagos who was quoted at cramped odds to win the 1400 metres Cyndy Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, duly obliged despite taking the final turn wide. The favourite swiftly got the lead inside the final two furlongs and stormed clear and had enough cushion to win from the late finishing Unstoppable and Ulysses. In a desperately close finish, Akshay Kumar was able to keep Blickfang a nose in front of Just Incredible. These two horses went past the post locked together with Blickfang getting the nod in the bob of the heads. Favourite Polonsky ran on late to finish a disappointing third.

Kiran Naidu drove out Bedford to a thrilling win over Different in the 1100 metres Starry Scene Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Different in the hands of Srinath shaped to collar the front-running Bedford but the latter fought on resolutely to win by a narrow margin. Aibak was third. Srinath lodged an objection against Naidu for interference stating that he was affected by the outward drift of the winner and that cost him a certain race. Though Bedford rolled out from the rails, the jockey did well everything under his command to prevent any contact and ensured that the drift did not have a bearing on the outcome of the result.

The 1400 metres Chaitanya Chakram Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category looked like a minefield, with favouritism alternating between horses. That`s My Star eventually got inspired support. In the event, Satin Symphony, the long shot from the stables of trainer Laxman Singh, hammered the opposition to win by a widening margin of five lengths over Hopscotch and Kintsugi. NRI Gift and That`s My Star who were the most favoured horses in the race, did not show up.
