Sultan Suleiman makes amends with easy win

By: Frankel   February 12 , 2021

Altaf Hussain trained Sultan Suleiman who had gone down fighting on the last occasion appreciated the step up in distance and recorded a resolute win in the 1600 metres Aziz H Ahmedbhoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Friday`s Mumbai races. Fancied runners won most races of the day with Pradeep Chouhan booting home three winners.

Sultan Suleiman was strongly favoured to win as he had the best credentials among the horses that were in the fray. Majestic Warrior set a fast pace, racing freely in front before weakening on entering the straight. Jockey Trevor Patel on Sultan Suleiman was unhurried in his approach and sat in the penultimate position and got busy approaching the final furlong. Sultan Suleiman responded well and shook off the challenge of last start winner Sunrise Ruby. Daddy`s Pride ran on to finish third while Majestic Warrior weakened to finish last in the small field that was in the fray.

Pesi Shroff trained Spinoza who was fractious at the gates on the last occasion and bolted riderless when he was being subjected to veterinary check was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Sir Charles Forbes Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Spinoza made light of the opposition with a strong run on the wide outside and had the race sewn up in the final furlong leaving Supreme Angel stranded. Love Warrior headed Bernini at the post to save place money.

Alluring Silver who had lost the 1000 Guineas due to running into rough weather had subsequently run in the 2000 Guineas the next week but performed way below expectations. Now running over a mile and a quarter trip and backed with conviction to win the 2000 metres Samuel Nathan Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, the progeny of Leitir Mor simply slammed the opposition. Alluring Silver had finished 22 lengths behind Lagarde and as such, the last performance was puzzling. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan confidently waited with Alluring Silver till turning for home before releasing the brakes as it were. Alluring Silver accelerated tremendously and was hailed a winner even before approaching the final furlong. Alluring Silver spared a widening margin of five lengths to Successor who in turn was another four-plus lengths ahead of Giant Star who hasn`t progressed at all after winning in impressive fashion in the earlier part of the season.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Maplewood was a smashing winner of the 1800 metres A Hoyt Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Socrates who had been withdrawn at the gates because of the tantrums on the last occasion was made the favourite. The one-sided support was indeed a surprise because Socrates, in his only run of the career, had finished way down the field. Socrates raced with the forward group and headed the field briefly in the stretch before Maplewood came home with menacing strides and sailed past the favourite for a win by a widening margin of six lengths. Multistarrer nosed out Walk The Talk to save place money.

Bezan Chenoy trained Aegon recorded an encore with an easy win over the heavily supported Spring Grove in the 1000 metres Quest For Cash Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The speedy Spring Groove led deep into the straight before Aegon overwhelmed the front-runner in the final 100 metres to record an easy win. Northern Singer was third. Ms Boss proved too good in the lower division of the race easily tackling the challenge of Little More. Favourite Enlightened failed to quicken when the pace picked up and barely saved the third position from Power of Neath.

Rehanullah Khan trained Wayin had let down huge expectations last time out. Now running over a trip of seven furlongs, Wayin yet again came in for massive support to make amends in the 1400 metres Pennywise Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Though Wayin took time to find his rhythm, the progeny of Multidimensional found foot approaching the final turn and produced a big run to go clear of the field well before the final furlong to win by a margin of over six lengths in the hands of jockey Pradeep Chouhan who had yet another profitable day booting home three winners. Marrakesh was second ahead of Genau. Sandesh had no problem in steering favourite Sergio to a facile win over Lambretta and Nusrat in the lower division of the race. From a handy third position at the final bend, Sergio shot ahead in the stretch to win as he pleased.
