Mirana obliges expectations in feature

By: Tippu Sultan   February 22 , 2021

Srinivas Reddy trained Mirana who had served notice of an imminent win with an eye-catching run behind Downtown Gal who had gone on to win again, had no problem in tackling the opposition en route to success in the 1800 metres Lady Emma Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the main event of Monday`s races held at Malakpet. Suraj Narredu continued to enjoy a good run booting home three winners.

After Egyptian Prince led most of the way and weakened coming into the straight, Horus shot ahead, with favourite Mirana in hot pursuit. Under a persevering ride by Suraj, Mirana asserted her supremacy down the final furlong and had enough lead to comfortably go past the winning post. Kesariya Balam produced a strong effort in chasing the favourite but found the favourite unrelenting. Horus weakened to finish third.

Trevor Patel was responsible for the success of lesser fancied Painted Apache in the 1100 metres Secret Star Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds only. Ambitious Star ran freely in front and seemed capable of taking it past the winning post when Painted Apache, under a strong drive by Trevor, began to close the gap. Painted Apache responded well and managed to neck out the front-runner in the dying moments of the race. Gregor Clegane was a close third.

Hilton Sequeira trained NRI Valley has been in sublime form and the progeny of Saamidd went to the post for the 1400 metres Elusive Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, as an on money favourite as the punters were very sure of the five-year-old mare maintaining the winning streak. Hyderabad`s champion jockey Akshay Kumar kept NRI Valley in a handy fourth position as City Wisdom set a hot pace. NRI Valley moved with big strides in the final furlong to assert her supremacy and spared two lengths at the finish to the late rallying Chuckit. Blazer ran on to get the third position ahead of Mark My Day while City of Wisdom weakened to settle for the fifth position.

Leo D`Silva trained Cheltenham brought off a big upset in the 1800 metres Hyperion Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. In the hands of apprentice jockey Afroz Khan, Cheltenham made a swift move in the home stretch and had the lead going into the final furlong. Favourite Lightning Power was way behind at this stage. Jockey Suraj Narredu on Lighting Power ran into rough weather and by the time he could extract his horse out of the pack and make his move, Cheltenham was in the vicinity of the post. Cheltenham easily held off the challenge of stablemate Miss Marvellous while Lightning Power rallied late to get third place.

Donald Netto trained Gusty Note tried runaway tactics in the 1200 metres Éclair Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, but could not sustain the lead till the winning post as Sreekant trained Blazing Jupiter produced a strong gallop to overwhelm the front-runner inside the final 100 metres. Gusty Note just about managed to save the place from The Special One and Alliston. The lower division of the race was claimed by Waseem Ahmed trained Angel Tesoro who justified the strong expectations with a big run in the final furlong which saw the fancied runner storm clear. Soul Empress was second ahead of Unstoppable while the heavily supported Linewiler made no show.

Local hero Akshay Kumar drove out Silver Set with all the resources at his command to get the measure of long-time leader Acadian Angel in the closing strides of the race in the 1200 metres Grand Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Acadian Angel had a useful lead going into the final furlong and with Suraj in the saddle, was expected to extract that bit extra. However, Silver Set managed to get the better of the front-runner close to home. Bedazzled and Rhine too finished on strongly to come within the striking reach of the winner. Suraj had it easy in the lower division of the race with favourite Beauty On Parade leading all the way and checking in by a widening margin of six lengths. Platinum Classz held off Let It Be Me for the second position in what was a cluster finish for minor placings.
