Bad planning continues to harm punters

  February 27 , 2021

The Bangalore Turf Club`s lack of imagination in its planning has hit the punters hard. The uncertainties of racing were further compounded on Saturday, by having as many as three races where the jockeys were not allowed to carry the whips. Even with the whips, most jockeys are not up to the mark. And with this handicap and glaring inconsistency of horses, punters were destined to suffer and so it transpired.

These days the whips seemed to be reserved for the punters who get the wrong end of the stick on every count, be it the way the races are conducted or the exorbitant entry fee charged including in outside betting centres where the facilities are zilch. The conscience of the authorities doesn`t trouble them when they milk these hapless enthusiasts.

Irfan Ghatala trained Cavallini had the best credentials barring the fact that there was always an uncertainty about him getting off level from the gates which had seen him perform inconsistently. In his eight runs prior to this race, he had just one win to this credit. However, his last win was so spectacular that punters were willing to forgive him for his waywardness and backed him with conviction to win the 1400 metres Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Cavallini was lethargic at the beginning though the ground conceded was not imposing enough. The progeny of Tazahum produced a powerful gallop in the homestretch to overwhelm stablemate Glenary who had held fort till beaten to record an easy win. Regal Music ran on late to claim the third position while the rest looked out of sorts. Ice Floe who was expected to figure at the finish, dropped her jockey Trevor Patel en route to the starting gate and was withdrawn from the fray.

Donna Bella was another horse from Irfan`s stable who had never been known for consistent ways. The five-year-old mare had performed poorly in her last two efforts and as such, the remarkable manner in which she won came as a surprise. After Asgardia led into the final furlong, Donna Bella came home with a big effort to swamp the front-runner and win by a widening margin of four lengths over Asgardia and Ultimate Speed. The winner clocked a smart time of one minute 12.24 seconds This was the third win recorded by Donna Bella from 15 starts and this performance has been her best thus far. Kimera who came in for solid support in betting raced keen into the straight before doing the disappearing act.

Neil Devaney trained Green Channel recorded a hat-trick of wins by barely surviving by the skin of her teeth in the 1600 metres Gateway of India Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Apprentice jockey J H Arul had Green Channel lead all the way and the five-year-old mare battled resolutely to win by a whisker. The fancied High Priestess who was making her run from way behind, got sandwiched between Speaking of Stars and the quickly improving Queen Regnant resulting in jockey Trevor having to check his horse and change course. This manoeuvre cost him a certain race. Despite High Priestess producing a powerful effort, the winning post came to the rescue of the winner. Queen Regnant was a close third. Trevor is surely not riding at the top of the game.

The lesser fancied runner from trainer Prithviraj`s yard Michigan Melody recorded the second win of the season in the hands of apprentice jockey Naveen Kumar V. Michigan Melody came home with a powerful burst of speed and assumed command in the final furlong to win the race with a great deal of ease from rank outsider Blazing Gold and late-rallying Areca Angel. Sulaiman Attaollahi trained well-bred Arathorn who was making his debut was backed to the exclusion of his rest but the four-year-old who had several niggles including the suspensory problem was not up to justify the support and finished poorly. Morganite who was one of the horses in the betting did not look the part and the way the jockey pulled up the horse in the stretch perhaps was indicative of the fact that the horse could have raced with some unresolved issues. M R Singh trained Stone House who had run 22 lengths behind the winner in his last outing shocked the field in Division II of the race, winning the race in the hands of apprentice Shreyas Singh, by a widening margin of three lengths. Ocean Dunes was second ahead of Sir Jersey. First timer Profound came for big money but the horse ran like a dud as such favourites always do. The Division III of the race was won by the well-backed Prasanna Kumar trainee Copper Sunrise who whizzed past the heavily backed Belli Deepa in the final furlong. Tiffany ran on to finish third.

Rajesh Narredu trained Knight In Hooves made an impressive winning debut, treating the opposition with disdain in the 1200 metres Kitty Bank Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Knight In Hooves was hanging out and Suraj Narredu had to use his experience to guide the youngster home for an easy win. The lead leg of the horse appeared to be left. Suraj Narredu said; ``Knight In Hooves did that for the first time. He was hanging to the left from the start of the race and came to the right in the final stages of the race. He never did that in work.`` The progeny of Excellent Art appears a good type of a youngster. Brunhild and Divine Blessings had useful outings.

The long wait of 900 odd days gave a positive result for the connections of Radiant Treasure. The Azhar Ali trained Radiant Treasure was well backed to score his second win from 23 outings and the progeny of Arazan had no problem to record a comprehensive win over Ultimate Striker and Apollo Bay in the 1400 metres Nethravathi Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Favourite Celestial Way led into the final furlong before fading out. The longish wait on the heavily backed Glorious Dancer from Lokanath`s yard failed to materialize as the other progeny of Arazan found the seven-furlong trip sharp for his style of running as he failed to quicken at the all-important end after giving hopes. Neil Darashah trained Desert Rose who had finished about 30 odd lengths behind the winner in her last effort brought off the big upset of the day staving off a strong bid from Pastiche. Daring Sweetheart was third ahead of Glorious Dancer.

BTC has lost many genuine punters because of its bizarre handicapping structure, which is different from other clubs..Most of the handicap races have horses carrying almost similar weight as others, difference in weights being hardly 1 or 2 kgs, making it a nightmare for punters to pick a winner based on form and handicap.
