Racing becomes victim of ego clash

  May 12 , 2010

Let us close racing, is the refrain one is hearing these days at the Bangalore Race Course. These sounds are coming from none other than those who are making a living out of racing. Their grouse is that authorities are not bowing to their dictate. The KROA has been at the forefront of disrupting races every season for one reason or the other. The Karnataka Trainers Association have also time and again shown their lack of commitment to their profession by treating their license to train as if it were a napkin paper by surrendering it on every other day in support of their demands. Racing is already under threat of closure and contributing to the acrimony is these people who don`t seem to mind losing racing. Otherwise how can they afford to let go of precious race days?
The cancellation of first two-days of racing of the Bangalore Summer Season is a clear example of ego getting the better of their senses. With little bit of tact, the problem could have been solved but the race horse owners association which was more keen on ensuring the cancellation of first two day`s of racing and the trainers association acted without bothering about the harm their action would cause when the authorities had climbed down considerably from their stand. Possibly the KROA and KTA want an unquestioning and servile authority which is ready to bow to its whims and fancies.

The same associations took a hostile stand against the syces when they demanded certain statutory benefits like Provident Fund. They took shelter on a technicality and denied these lowly paid laborers their rightful due. And when the syces threatened a strike, they acted in a very aggressive manner. But the same people don`t blink an eye when going on strike against the club for perceived insult. .

The cancellation of races came about not because of any earth shattering issue bothering the owners and trainers. There was a cut in the stake money to the tune of Rs 3 crores which the club said was necessitated by the need to build up revenues for any future eventuality. The stake money in Bangalore is pretty high compared to other centers in the country and a number of incentives are also being given to owners.

The KROA and KTA insisted that the stakes should be restored back to original level and it also demanded the contingency fund which had been created from cutting a portion of the stake money over a period of time principally to meet any future statutory obligation be repatriated to the association. The club on its part stated that they would return the same after an audit and added that they would not undertake future responsibility either for cutting the stakes for the contingency fund nor would it provide three month credit to owners. Later on the club modified the stand and said that they would give three month BTF credit if the owners association did not insist on immediate withdrawal of money from BTC and they gave an undertaking that if racing were to close down by September 22, they should offset the arrears of BTF from owners against the fund lying with the club. KROA did not agree for this and this led to a stalemate. KROA refused to offset any default from its members.

The contingency fund in fact has been contributed principally by leading stake earners of this centre and as such, KROA cannot lay claim to this money without the written compliance of all its members. Considering that BTC is a recognized corporate body and KROA is an association consisting of members who have not applied for membership but are forcefully deemed members by virtue of them being race horse owners. By forcing compliance of all owners, BTC has thus empowered KROA to prove a hurdle in the smooth conduct of racing.

It is strange that KROA and KTA does not have any grievance with Mysore Race Club where stake money is poorer but is accepted without any protest.. Strikes are also unheard of at any other racing centre in the country.

this is sad to know .. That your story looks like its totally onesided .. When the cost cutting measures are taken by the club its fair according to you .. When the kroa and kta demand normal stakes ..its cruel .. And very unprofessional ........you probably dont realise .. If the racing comes to an end .. We all are losers .. Owners have to find ways to dispose their horses .. In my opinion its next to impossible .. Can you imagine the kind of money owners might end up losing .. Its phenomenal .. And about the trainers .. Barring few influential trainers .. I mean handful .. Will get to train in other centers and the rest will be history .

Dear Sharan,

It is very nice of you to update the indian racing faternity of the developments in various race club. Here i would like to state that when the stake was increased how come the race club now wants to reduce the stakes and the incentives. Now that all the race clubs have come forwarded to give 50% of royalty instead of 23%, i cant understand what the issue is all about with the BTC. I also do understand that this problems have been created by none other than PRASAD2 (to the power of two) that is nirmal and shiva. .

This article by Mr.sharan is very good and he is NOT ONE SIDED as mentioned by Mr.Prasannakumar. All these days BTC has increased the stakes money for every season and it was higher than any other turf clubs in india. 10% decrease will make owners into trouble? it is actually if owners and trainers are very much interested in racing to continue and win and take stakes money offered they could have entered horses and they would not have let the races canclled. It is because some one who is angry with the club and its present administration has instigated these owners and trainers not to enter and they lost the twodays stake money and commision to rrainers and jockerys. lot of jockeys from all over india are here now and it is loss to them also because of this attitude of trainers and owners. No body can dictate that u should give credit to us. if a owner is able to buy a horse for several lacs cant he pay the btf without clubs credit every month why they need 3months credit from club? so it is good for every one in racing if they allow the racing to start withut any further delay.

The Bangalore Summer Meeting does not commence without clearing any obstacles. Every racing person waits for the BSM to take off, but some the TAKE OFF is made difficulty. I remember very well one year there was no problem, but few professional with connivance of few officials created a one with respect to the RACING TRACKS and made sure that the first two days were cancelled. Any was it is a jinx. The above stated problems and few articles of Mr Sharan is very clear that at this stage, the BTC in totality (Management, Officials, Owners, Trainers, Jockeys etc.,) requires arbitrators comprising of eminent racing personalities who have the experience of Racing Adminstration and Owners of Race Horses, who are very much available in our country. To name a few Dr M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Dr Vijay Mallya, HH Srikanta Datta Narasimha Raja Wadiyar, Sardar Ramchandra Raj Urs, Mr Surender Reddy, Mr. N N Reddy, Mr Belliappa, Mr Vivek Jain, Mr Cyrus Madan. I hope better sense prevails and racing is put on tracks immediately.

Perhaps, the KROA and KTA choose Summer season only because there are no other races around the country. Simply it would be the punters looking forward for a fresh season and for BTC it is business as usual. So, trying to corner, KROA and KTA bound to loose a couple of race days or even more.

The stand taken by them especially when the sword is hanging on Bangalore racing, is after all questionable to use a very mild statement.

Whom are they threatening and what are they achieving year after year. Only God knows.

The way it is going it shows that KROA & KTA are just trying to show their strength on the club.

First
All the trainer promise the moon to the new owner who enters the racing as a owner later the owner is forgotten and some times the trainer goes to the extent of not attending the calls of may owners who lost their money by betting on the fancied horses of that particular trainer.
When the Trainer take the horses in his charge he should be able to recover the money from that particular horse in raceing itself by training it hard and makeing it to earn the stake money itself their is stake money up to the 7th places horses running at least twice in 4th 5th 6th will be able to recover the BTF. which none of the trainer do.
Let them run all the horses to earn the stakemoney than the BTF problem will be solves Eg: A owner pays around 2,50,000 for horses(Average) imagine the horses does not performe for 6 month the owner ends up paying more that 60,000 only for the maintaines.
The trainer says that they have to pay the syes every 5 th of the month.
Most of the trainer does not have one syses for one horse their are Falthu`s who are not regestired as Syses and paid 3,000 per month and have to take care of more than 3 horses in this way trainer pockets the rest of the money,
The Club know about the unregistered Syse but they are silent.
All the trainer says they will give a gamble on that particular horses to the owner which doesn`t materialize at all.
Run all the horses for the stake money were the owner will be happy to See money earned (It is after all an Investment) Expect some big owner who not bother about the BTF cause majority of the owners are small time Like haveing 1/2 share or 1 or 2 horses in their name.
It is better to be quite than commenting on any issues IN B T C
