Holy Smoke makes it five for five

By: Frankel   July 29 , 2016

Faisal Abbas trained Holy Smoke maintained his amazing run of wins by extending his winning streak to five when the four-year old son of Phoenix Tower easily annexed the 1400 metres Fair Haven Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Friday`s Pune races. Races ran kindly for punters with fancied runners ruling the roost in the majority of events.

Holy Smoke was well placed to score over the more accomplished Persian Prince whom he had beaten in the past as well. Persian Prince had always proved a handy customer whenever he was allowed to have an uncontested lead in front and this time out too he enjoyed a similar run. However, Persian Prince was not possibly at his best fitness after his win in a multi-million at Chennai during March. Holy Smoke was spot on for the race and won with a measure of comfort.

Pradeep Chouhan had Persian Prince in front while Suraj was content to settle Holy Smoke in a handy second position till entering the homestretch. Holy Smoke smoothly accelerated in the run in for home but in doing so, he leaned on to Persian Prince but the interference was marginal. Holy Smoke went away for an effortless win over Persian Prince, with Staristocrat finishing a suggestive third. Ageless ran too poorly for comfort. Chouhan took a chance in the Stewards room by objecting against Suraj for interference but the same was overruled.

Malesh Narredu trained Arabelle had the fitness due to summering at Bangalore and also the impressive timing that she clocked in her last winning effort. Horses which clock the timing that she clocked generally have an uninterrupted run right up to the highest class. If Arabelle was fancied strongly on the basis of her last effort, it was justified. Captain Courage no doubt had impressive credentials having recorded a fine win at Chennai where he had beaten the likes of Castle Key hallow. The latter had gone on to win two races subsequently. However, the fact that Parmar was declared to ride Captain Courage may be the reason why Arabelle went to the post as a strong favourite. Arabelle flopped beyond expectations, not sighted at the busy end well before the race came on the boil. Captain Courage cruised from about the fourth position inside the final furlong and stretched away for a handsome win over Rider On The Storm who went on an aggressive start to finish mission. Golden Belle was third.

Dallas Todywalla trained Art Deco was spot on for the 1000 metres Amorous Knight Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. This was reflected in the enthusiastic betting on the daughter of Hyderabad-based stallion Stern Opinion. Art Deco did not disappoint huge expectations as she moved into a handy position from the wide outside draw and the left the field stranded to win with great deal of ease. Rock In Rio came from nowhere to edge out Eternalinspiration for the second spot. Riot of Colours who had her share of supporters, played up at the gates, causing injury to jockey Dashrath and was withdrawn from the fray. The jockey did not fulfil his other engagements of the day. Sandesh had to work very hard on favourite Glorious Angel to just about get the better of first-timer Dubrovnik to win the lower division of the race. Dubrovnik who had worked into a handy position from the wide outside draw fought every inch of the final furlong with Glorious Angel before the latter prevailed by a neck. Firebolt was third.

Favourite Rosella was none too well placed to win the 1200 metres Zahra Plate (Div I), a handicap race for four-year-olds and over but produced a powerful run in the final stages of the race to edge past the front running Star One to justify the weight of expectations. Captain Abdon who showed up on the wide outside, rallied well to edge out Star One to clinch the second place. Favourite Lord Arazan looked to be in a spot of bother as he failed to get a forward position and was forced to travel wide. Jockey Yash Narredu cleverly decided to wait for his chance rather than go very wide in order to move up prominently. The strategy worked as Lord Arazan came home with a tremendous burst of speed in the final furlong to sail past the front running Indus Prince for an impressive win. Lord Arazan looks like a horse who would relish longer trips. Carralisa went very wide in the straight but nevertheless galloped resolutely but narrowly failed to head Indus Prince home for the runner-up position.

S S Shan trained Turf Dancer won the 1200 metres Carbon Star Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, quite easily from Stardom Calling. Turf Dancer was not getting a clear run but jockey C S Jodha worked his way on the wide outside and had the daylight for himself in the final furlong. The progeny of Diffident flew home and easily collared the front-running Stardom Calling to win at nourishing odds. Incentio necked out Ancient Glory to claim the third position on the frame.

Favourite Royal Sapphire from the stables of trainer Narendra Lagad readily justified the favouritism by claiming the 1000 metres Bud Royale Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Royal Sapphire tracked Good Memory into the straight before storming clear to record an impressive win. Dusk N Dawn, with hardly any strong resistance from her jockey, managed to nose out My Freedom for the second berth.

Lagad trained Secret Flame who hit the front inside the final two furlongs, stretched clear to establish a useful good cushion which stood the four-year-old filly in good stead when Unico Corazon and Sanam charged home with late bids. Secret Flame held on to win the 1600 metres Ascot Lass Plate, another race for horses in the lowest category, at lucrative odds.
