The Champ gets fourth straight win by a whisker

By: Frankel   August 6 , 2016

Pesi Shroff trained The Champ recorded his fourth straight win by a whisker over emerging three-year-old filly in the 1200 metres P Hadow Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Saturday`s Pune races. With many unexpected turns and twists in the way the results accrued, punters found it hard to pick winners with any degree of conviction.

Sydney Harbour had enhanced her reputation at Bangalore where she had won a sprinters` million. Though she was taking on seasoned campaigners, she was well supported to have a bold show. The Champ who has a bagful of wins to his credit, including a hat-trick during the last Mumbai season was another to corner the betting. Surprisingly Paramour was the firm favourite on the basis of his back to back wins at Mumbai. The betting indicated a tight three-horse finish and the result obtained was in keeping with this belief. Paramour is bred to stay but the trainer continues to keep her to a sprint. Her half-sister Burnished Gold has already won over a distance of mile and quarter.

Dashrath Singh had Sydney Harbour lead from the front with The Champ in close proximity while Paramour was eased in the third position. Sydney Harbour appeared to have shook off The Champ as she surged ahead in the final furlong with her only threat being Paramour who was rallying along the rails. Even as Sydney Harbour was engaged in a stiff battle for supremacy, The Champ came home with renewed effort and put his neck in front. Paramour was another neck behind.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Greek Goddess made a smashing debut in the 1000 metres Potential Champion Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Sandesh had Greek Goddess take over the running from the start and the well-bred daughter of Canford Cliffs did not let anyone come near her as she sped away for an effortless win over My Blessings and Shaoqing. It was the owner mate of Greek Goddess which came in for spirited betting to end up as a favourite but Royal News was never in the hunt.

Pesi Shroff-trained Frosty was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1600 metres Hurricane Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Long shot Cavalia hit the front with the favourite Frosty in chase but the picture remained unchanged well past the post. Frosty could not bridge the leeway and ended up a tame second. It was a disappointing effort from the well-bred three-year old who was taking on a modest lot of horses. Flying Dragon was third.

Dallas Todywalla trained Zahrazan won the Ruben Star Plate (Div I, a race for horses rated 40 to 66,) in the hands of apprentice jockey Vishal who managed to goad the long shot to measure front running Don Corleone in the dying moments of the race. Favourite Cannonball Run failed to gain the needed momentum and was a beaten cause well before the race took a serious turn and had to be content with a miserable third. The lower division of the race was claimed by Faisal Abbas trained Niobrara who left his opponents stranded in the final furlong to record an emphatic win over the fancied Phoenix Knight. Personify necked out Spear of Trium for the third place.

B Fifty Two had no problem when recording his third straight win in the 2000 metres Strengthtostrength Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Heather attempted to win start to finish but B Fifty Two put paid to her hopes when she cruised past her in the final furlong without having to be ridden out. Sandesh had an arm-chair ride to victory. Phenomenal Memory ran on to finish third.

Narendra Lagad trained American Agatta benefitted by the race run that she had last week when she came home with a powerful run, covering the leeway over the front runners with the minimum of effort and recorded a facile win in the 1000 metres Radian Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to46. Way Ahead edged past Altus to get the runner-up berth.

Lesser fancied Simon Says showed up on the wide outside at the final turn and picked up tremendous acceleration to go into a decisive lead in the final furlong of the 1400 metres Arts Plate, a race for horses rated in the lowest category. Zabrok went in earnest chase of the eventual winner but was found wanting. The well backed Alfonso was not sighted at the busy end.
