Chef D’Oeuvre springs a surprise

By: Frankel   August 20 , 2016

Ironically named Gamble For Love Trophy, a race for horses 80 and above, the feature event of Sunday`s Pune races lived up to the name when the least fancied of the lot, Chef D`Oeuvre managed to pull it off at the expense of last start winner Kandinsky in a tight finish. The small card of seven events saw a fair share of favourites coming through. Apprentice jockey D S Daman had a rewarding day, with a treble.

Airco who was marginally better placed than Kandinsky vis-à-vis their last clash was the designated favourite. There was spirited support for Kandinsky while Bull Run was considered as a possible upset. Chef D`Oeuvre was at a steady price which did not serve as a guidance for those looking for a clue from the betting ring. Trevor took Kandinsky on a start to finish mission and held the initiative deep into the straight but inside the final furlong, Chef D`Oeuvre joined issue along with rank outsider Commander too showing up prominently on the wide outside. Airco who was up with the pace was the first one to get beat at the top of the straight. Chef D`Oeuvre managed to overhaul Kandinsky closer home. The latter however managed to retain the runner-up berth by a whisker from Commander.

One of the dramatic performances of the day came from Narendra Lagad trained Magical Dancer who appeared to have lost the plot after losing considerable ground at the start in the 1200 metres A J Wadia Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The race saw Lucky Strike being backed as if her defeat was out of action. Magical Dancer who was tailed off last till approaching the final bend, circled around the field and came the widest into the straight. Magical Dancer produced sparkling acceleration and the race was as good as over in the final furlong itself. Magical Dancer went away for a win by a widening margin of five lengths over the battling duo of Orla and Lucky Strike. The victory of Magical Dancer highlighted the fact that he was a much better class horse than the ones he was taking on.

M K Jadhav trained Uncle Scrooge was unlucky to have the luck of the race go against him in the 2400 metres Saint Emilion Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Soon after start Uncle Scrooge had to be checked to prevent it from going wide as Komandant cut across the path. Uncle Scrooge fell back to the last position and from then on, he travelled in the rear and could not work out a passage along the inside. Uncle Scrooge had to travel very wide in the straight which affected his chances. Square Moon moved up strongly from about the fifth position at the final bend and gradually got the better of Cha Cha Cha who had attempted start to finish mission. Uncle Scrooge finished on strongly to get the runner-up berth, the first three finishers all less than a length of each other.

Malesh Narredu trained Unforgettable You was strongly fancied to win the 1400 metres Pune Mirror Salver, a race for maiden three-year-olds ahead of Sherlock. However, Sherlock put up a dismal performance to finish poorly. Never Say Never was in a strong position to have a decisive say but closer home, Unforgettable You was able to measure the front-runner in the final stages of the race with a strong run down the final furlong to make a winning debut. Aurora Australis was third.

Cooji Katrak trained Jacknife was the recipient of sustained betting in the 1400 metres Thanda Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. That Jacknife hadn`t been exploited thus far was evident when apprentice jockey D S Daman had the favourite dictate the pace from the start and was not troubled by any of the runners enroute to an easy win. Wonder Story came from a long way back to nose out Zabrok to claim the runner-up berth.

Sanjay Kolse trained Don Corleone looked outstanding in the 1000 metres D K Ashish Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 after the forward effort last time out. Apprentice jockey Amit took Don Corleone on a start to finish mission which was achieved without any bother. Cezanne was closing in the leeway in the final stages of the race but that was not good enough to fetch the desired result. Palace Girl also benefitted from a race run and finished third.

Daman`s three wins of the day started in the first race of day through rank outsider Seacrets in the 1400 metres Pleasure Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Like most winners of the day, Seacrets also went on an end to end mission and was not stretched by any of the runners while recording a facile win. Mythical Sunrise held off Replica to get the runner-up berth.
