Magnificence overcomes hiccups to win feature

By: Frankel   August 21 , 2016

Shiraz Sunderji trained Magnificence overcame a sluggish start and won the 1400 metres Panchshil Million, the feature event of a lacklustre card of seven events that were gone through on Sunday. Magnificence improved places steadily and by the time the runners took the final bend, he was ready for the challenge and converted adversity into victory.

Queen Credible who had run a noteworthy second in her last outing enjoyed favouritism. Magnificence was at long odds in a race that looked very difficult to spot the possible winner. Both Magnificence and Queen Credible were off to a poor start but the former was able to make light of the hiccup. Magical Glory led all the way and led deep into the straight before Magnificence came up with a powerful burst of speed to go sailing clear in the final furlong. Pink Panther too essayed a strong challenge but found the eventual winner too strong for comfort. The four-year old gelding also could not hold on to the second position as Exodus came up with late flourish to finish an eye-catching second. Magical Memory and Arakawah should benefit from the good forward effort that they had. Queen Credible was a tame fourth. Khayyam took the final turn miles wide and appeared to be in distress.

Pesi Shroff had a short-priced double during the course of day`s action. The well-bred Arlene duly obliged in the 1600 metres Star Wish Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Arlene who raced up with the pace but went wide at the final turn and practically raced the final two furlongs on the outer rail despite which she proved too superior to the rest and won easily from late finishing Mekong Delta and Flying Dragon.

Costa Smeralda was another winner from Pesi`s yard. The short-priced favourite Costa Smerlada moved swiftly in the homestretch from the handy third position and easily collared the front-running Volantis. Volantis fought back to retain the second place from Eiger`s Tiger who looked like he was going to overhaul the long-time leader but faltered.

Imtiaz Sait trained Eternalinspiration had the benefit of a good forward run and enjoyed an edge over the rest in the 1200 metres Mohammed Rasheed Beg & Rahat Beg Trophy, a race for three-year-olds. Grey Flannel who was running after a long gap of 225 days, found favour with the bettors who installed her as the favourite. Grey Flannel attempted start to finish tactics with Eternalinspiration in chase attendance. The favourite led on sufferance because it was clear at the top of the straight that Eternalinspiration would break clear once the brakes were released on her. The moment jockey Dashrath Singh asked for a vigorous effort, Eternalinspiration bounced clear of the favourite and stretched away for a facile win. Grey Flannel stayed on to finish second ahead of Yanna Rascala who got the measure of Forward Thrust close home.

Sanjay Kolse trained Mind of Madness was quietly fancied to win the 1000 metres Dinkoo N Chenoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 despite the wide outside draw and the fact that five-kg claimer Amit was declared to ride. Mind of Madness shot off like a scalded cat from the gates and took over the running within the first 100 metres and thereafter she travelled so well that the others in the fray had no chance of catching up with her. Favourite Marcus Aurelius who raced in the second position could not do much to cover the leeway as the front-runner had more in reserve. American Agatta ran on from behind to get the third slot.

Imtiaz Sait trained Nescar showed a clean pair of heels to her rivals with a speedy effort in the 1000 metres Aurora Aurealis Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Nescar shot into the lead from the start and kept on expanding the lead in the straight to win with something to spare in the hands of apprentice Raghuveer Singh. Favourite Harvey struggled hard but failed to get the extra gear which could have helped his cause. Golden Belle snatched the third place from Rider On The Storm who put up a poor show after performing creditably in his last run. Mercahntofvenice slipped approaching the final bend and jockey Ajinka was very nearly unseated but he managed to regain his balance and stayed put in the saddle.

Lesser fancied Hope Springs from the stables of veteran trainer S S Shah gave a strong performance in the 1000 metres Fine Arrow Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Hope Springs bolted to the front from the word `go` and despite veering off a straight course in the final furlong under pressure, still was good enough to beat the opposition with ease. Rich N Rare gave a chase to the front-runner but despite her best efforts, she was not good enough to overhaul the front-runner. Blaze The Track snatched the third place from Amazon Cat close home while favourite Rachel made no show.
