Azzurro proves too good for Mumbai based horses

By: Frankel   September 11 , 2016

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Azzurro who has been amazingly consistent, had no problem in tackling the challenge of Western India counterparts enroute to a resolute win in the Gr 3 Idar Gold Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Pune races. Azzurro easily tackled the runaway leader The Unicorn in the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort.

A price of little more than even money on Azzurro must be considered as generous for the simple reason that Azzurro had performed at the highest level, against some of the best known contemporaries. None in the field looked a threat though there was the fluke conqueror of the Myrtlewood in the fray. Four-year-old Commodore who had recorded three wins in a row, was attempting a quantum jump and hence was not considered too much of a threat despite the exalted status of coming from an elite stable.

Parmar took The Unicorn on a runaway mission and had a lead of over a distance over the rest in the hope that he could take the others by surprise if they faltered in their pace judgment. It was not to be as the pace quickened approaching the final turn and those behind were steadily moving up to be in striking position. The Unicorn kicked on merrily in the straight. Barring Azzurro, the rest fell behind with no hope of being in contention. Trevor Patel drove out The Azzurro to get the desired response and the progeny of Azamour began to gain ground on the front-runner decisively in the final furlong and stormed clear for an easy win. B Fifty-Two necked out Rodeo for the third place. Commodore ran disappointingly.

Malesh Narredu trained Shivalik Shine was bidding for a hat-trick but she beat her chances with a lethargic start in the 1000 metres Radical Force Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Over the scurry and against the higher rated horses, Shivalik Shine`s task straight away became a hopeless one. Last start winner Nescar led from the start and put up a dogged resistance in front. It took an all-out effort on the part of jockey Trevor Patel to get Harvey to not only to cover the leeway but also preserve enough legs to get past the front-runner which the latter achieved in the closing strides of the race. Vistana held off Shivalik Shine for the third place.

Silver Beauty had recorded an impressive win last time out and looked to have an excellence chance in the 1600 metres Hawke Bay Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. After racing in a prominent position till the final 300 metres, Silver Beauty slipped away from the rest to record a decisive win over Seagrass who rallied well to take the second place. Favourite Magnolia looked beat right from the top of the start and her laboured effort fetched her the third place.

Malesh who saddled Silver Beauty, also had another success through Shield of Achilles who recorded an encore with a decisive win in the 1200 metres Premier Collection Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Suraj Narredu had Shield of Achilles prominently in front and the progeny of Arazan skipped clear in the final furlong to win with ease from Eternal Inspiration and Frankest.

The wrong `un struck in the 2000 metres Spearhead Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Diablo was backed spiritedly to win ahead of Sanam. But the one to pull up a big surprise was Sanam`s stablemate Striking Story who went on a start to finish mission and refused to budge from there to win at big odds. Sanam, despite a slow start, came home with a flourishing run and gave hopes but the front-runner showed enough resolution to pull through. Diablo did not stir things when finishing third.

The well backed Mount Mckinley from the stables of trainer Adhiraj Jodha had no problem in justifying favouritism with an aggressive start to win mission in the 1400 metres Sound Factor Stakes, a race for maiden three-year-olds. C S Jodha had no hesitation in taking Mount Mckinley to the front from the start and enjoyed an uncontested lead right till the end. Sovereignsky came up with a late bid to occupy the second slot ahead of Caielin.

Cooji Katrak trained Pugnacious recorded an encore, having the race well sewn up in the final furlong of the 1400 metres Yogender Singh Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Favourite Mikayla failed to change gears in the straight and was never in the contention. The fight for the next three places behind the winner. Jolfa was a neck second ahead of late flashing Godsent and Mikalya.

Faisal Abbas trained Marcus Aurelius had benefitted by the two good forward runs as he produced a decisive thrust in the final furlong to collar the front-runners and recorded a decisive win in the 1000 metres Glensanda Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Dragon of War was second ahead of Baryshnikov. There was solid betting on Flamboyant Flame but the filly appeared to be in distress right from the start, something being amiss with her physical condition as she flopped dismally.
