Proserpine wins Air Force Trophy in a thriller

  November 5 , 2016

Neil Darashah trained Proserpine fought every inch of the final furlong with Fire Glow before prevailing by a whisker thanks to a power-packed riding by Sandesh in the 1400 metres Air Force Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50, which featured Saturday`s Bangalore races. What decided the outcome of the race was the superior riding of Sandesh whose perseverance finally paid off.

The trend in the betting ring indicated that the two main contenders were Fire Glow and Proserpine. Fire Glow had recorded an impressive win in his debut run with a late rally whereas Proserpine had proved to be consistent and more experienced of the two. Wrekin went at a good clip in front with Fire Glow caught four horses off the fence in about the fourth position while Sandesh was content to keep Proserpine tucked in behind, waiting for the opportune time. Rounding the final turn, Imran Khan pushed Fire Glow to take over the running with Proserpine hot on his heels. The two fought out a relentless battle before Proserpine prevailed in a thriller. Fabulous ran on to take the third place.

Lokanath trained Ambitious Reward won the fourth race of his career after an eternal wait of 1082 days. Jersey Wonder who had finished an eye-catching second to Hall of Famer at Mysore, was backed to the exclusion of the rest to win the 1600 metres Kalinadi Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Mickey Mouse acted like a spoiler when he went on a runaway mission followed by Secret Dimension, Supreme Dominator, Jersey Wonder while Ambitious Reward was in the rear group along with Southern Fantasy and Summer Dawn. Mickey Mouse came into the straight well clear and looked like he would be successful in his mission as Jersey Wonder was struggling to pick up momentum. The complexion of the race changed once Ambitious Reward, benefitting by the pace of the race, began to warm up and the strong driving finish of Sandesh enabled the lesser fancied runner to get past the long-time leader in the shadow of the post. Jersey Wonder struggled to finish third. Southern Fantasy ran a pathetic race after a promising effort at Mysore.

High Profile was well waited with for a touch and it materialised in the 1200 metres Agumbe Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 20. Backed to the exclusion of the rest in a category which caters to the lowest rated horses, High Profile took his own time to overhaul the front-running Atlantic City and Splendid Brave in the homestretch. Closer homer, High Profile asserted his supremacy to win with a measure of comfort to justify the huge amount of money that he attracted in the betting ring.

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Captain Morgan had to fight for the most part of the homestretch before drawing clear in the closing stages of the race to win the 1400 metres Madras Race Club Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds. Antananarivo led from the start with Captain Morgan in earnest the chase and this scene continued deep into the final furlong before the latter was driven out by a relentless Trevor Patel. Royal Sceptre ran on to finish third. Serena Ballerina was sluggish at the start and was never in serious contention thereafter.

African Emperor was blazing the track and looked to be a cut above the rest in the 1200 metres Master Key Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Accordingly, the speedy customer was quoted at miserly odds by the bookmakers. Ryan Marshall had no problem in taking African Emperor to the front and the favourite faced no threat from any of the runners as he skipped clear in the straight to win in emphatic fashion. Flirting Eyes showed some spark towards the close by occupying the second position ahead of Ballerophon with a late charge in the straight. Suraj Narredu drove out Royal Serenity to a start to finish victory in the lower division of the race. The trend in the market reflected strong support for Daisy Duke, with Royal Serenity next in demand. Royal Serenity showed good speed to grab the lead within the first 1000 metres of the start and though she drifted out of the straight course in the final stages of the race, she had enough cushion to win the race from Daisy Duke with a measure of comfort. Mayweather ran on from way behind to take the third place to given an indication that the three-year-old is coming to hand and could be trusted to strike early.

Sandesh was once again in the limelight, booting home his third winner of the day through Ambleside who fought a resolute battle with Majestic Style and prevailed in the end to claim the 1200 metres Malaprabha Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Majestic Style went on a start to finish mission, with Ambleside in about the fourth position. Majestic Style was hard-pressed to retain the lead by Only Princess but even as he was in the process of asserting his supremacy, Ambleside came up with a powerful effort. After a brief duel, Ambleside asserted his supremacy as Majestic Style faltered. Only Princess was third.

Lesser fancied Goodwill Warrior was driven out to contain the late flourish of Fotogenic to win the 1400 metres Trombay Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Inside the final furlong, at least four horses were in contention. Goodwill Warrior measured Reformer closer home and just about lasted out to win Fotogenic who finished on the fastest of the lot. Reformer managed to stay ahead of Opening Act to get the third place.
