Handy Man triumphs in Mangalorkar Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   November 7 , 2016

Satheesh trained Handy Man triumphed in the 1600 metres M B Mangalorkar Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 46 to 70, the feature event of races held at Malakpet on Monday. Mangalorkar was one of the legendary trainers in the history of Indian racing, known for shrewd placing of horses. His statistical feat at Hyderabad in the early part of his career and later at Bangalore have all earned him a place of eminence in Indian racing. It is in the fitness of things that Hyderabad Race Club framed a race in memory of the man with the inscrutable face for his outstanding achievements.

The race had a very competitive look about it. Elysian topped the chart in the betting ring, with support coming for Mr Baahubali and Ans Ans Ans. In the event, Handy Man who was at lucrative odds, came through with a powerful burst of speed in the final furlong to win the race quite competently from Mr Baahubali who attempted to steal the race with runaway tactics but faltered close home. Elysian struggled for speed and ended up a tame third. Ans Ans Ans did not show the spark of old.

In a race meant for two-year-olds, new stallion Surfraider had his winner through Sarvatra who circled around the field from the wide outside draw and gave a bold performance in front to win the Golconda Plate in emphatic fashion. The winner spared more than five lengths to Lady Admiral and Kohinoor Lucy.

Srinivas Reddy trained Prospero flopped badly in the 1200 metres Golconda Plate, a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, the highly thought off Prospero failed to show the spark required to be a force to reckon with and her timid performance has surely put paid to the hopes of her possible attempt at the Guineas. Dream Vision shot through in the final furlong to win the race at long odds in fine fashion from long-time leader Dream Girl who was bidding for a hat-trick. Prospero ran on towards the close but was neck shy behind Dream Girl in third position.

Trevor Patel drove out Srinivas Reddy trained Wild Heart to a start to finish victory in the 1200 metres Recommender Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Wild Heart was hard-pressed towards the closing stages of the race by Prime Time but the front-runner had enough legs to last out the trip by a narrow margin. There was good deal of money wagered on Good Taste but the fancied runner failed to pick up speed and had to settle for the third place.

Prasad Raju trained City Colors recorded an emphatic repeat win in the 1400 metres Race Club Cup, a race for horses rated 26 t0 50. City Colors was brought into strong contention by Suraj Narredu in the final furlong and the favourite fought out a resolute battle with the front-running Vijay`s Dynamite for a brief while before storming clear to win in great style. Gorgeous Lady was third.

Back To Business from trainer Vittal Deshmukh`s stable produced a terrific burst of speed from way off the pace to get the better of front-running ironically named Act In Time to land the spoils in the 1100 metres Eturnagaram Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Bharat King was third ahead of Pamella who failed to build on her previous eye-catching effort. There was some support for Onk Onk Onk who failed to make any show.

Despite travelling wide all the way in the straight K R K Raju trained Kohinoor Valour proved too good for the opposition in the 1400 metres Kinnerasani Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 0 to 30. There was a fight for minor placings with Raja Hindustani edging out Brioni and Danielle for the runner-up berth. The last named came in for spirited support but failed to justify the flurry of expectation close to race time. The lower division of the race was also claimed by Raju`s Cannon Grey who took over the running at the top of the straight and sped away for a comfortable win over Athletic Approach who found it hard to bridge the unassailable lead that the eventual leader had taken in the final furlong. The removal of blinkers had some positive effect on Athletic Approach who ran a fair race. Full of Life was some distance behind in the third position.

Srinivas Reddy rounded off the tally for the day with three winners when Forever Bullish recorded a sensational win in the lower division of the race. Losing considerable ground at the start, Forever Bullish looked to have no chance but the lesser fancied runner devoured ground in the straight to win the race quite easily in the end. Symbol of Gold staved off favourite Sensational Girl to get the second position in a tight finish.
