Mr Gorgeous plays spoilsport in the feature

By: Goldie Boy   November 12 , 2016

Trainer Vijay Singh`s 20/1 shot, Mr Gorgeous (Dashrath Singh-up) cashed in on his fitness while winning the 1,400m Mayfowl Cup, Saturday`s main attraction in the nine-event card. The afternoon also witnessed Vijay`s heavily fancied runner, Adrestia (C. Alford) just about delivering the goods in the 1,600m Pearson Surita Memorial Cup. Trainer Arti Doctor was also among winners. The Lady trainer saddled Multivalue and Arabian Sky to victory.

In the Mayfowl Cup, the two tote favourites, Multitude (s. John) and Satellite (Suraj Narredu) were expected to fight out the finish. The form and terms also favoured the two named but the out-come of the race fully confirmed the observations of the morning birds that they were under-prepared in view of the long season ahead. Both horses failed narrowly when the heat was on.

Multitude was clearly tiring having made all the running and so were Satellite and Shivalik Storm in the later half of the slated trip. So much so, Shivalik Storm came under the pressure from the 800m marker. As a result of this, Mr Gorgeous, despite trailing the field till 350m from home, chewed up Multitude and Satellite once he changed gears.

The fall of favourites, in fact, hardly came as a surprise. Some of the sporting horseowners, eying for the stake-money, were more interested in winning races while most adopted the wait-and-watch policy, thanks to the demonetising of the bigger currency notes and the two RCTC betting outlets – one each in England and Australia. The tote centres named are learnt to be doing brisk business. Only 100 rupees currency notes were accepted on the RCTC totalisators as bookmakers abstained for the second day in succession. This is all one can say in a nutshell.

Vijay`s Adrestia (C. Alford) beat Mystic Romance (Suraj Narredu) who tried to win from the start but failed just about close home, in the Pearson Surita Memorial Cup. Arti`s Multivalue, too, was ridden in a similar manner, by Alford to down a heavily fancied Cadman (John) in the Cavalry Cup.
However, the start-to-finish tactics adopted by Arti`s Arabian Sky, in the 1,200m Chios Handicap (Div-I), paid off. The 8/10 favourite on the tote won by a wide margin to leave trainer Bharath Singh`s Sherwood (Dashrath) in a wild goose chase.

Bharath`s long shot, Atheist (Alford) also made a short work of the opposition, making every post of the Chios Handicap (Div-I), in a comfortable manner.

The story was no different in 1,400m Regal Connection Handicap, which was claimed by trainer Dipak Karki`s bolt from the blue, Fite For Honour (Zarar Khan), who left the opposition look pedestrian after taking over the running from the long time leader, Washington (Alford).

The afternoon started with trainer Farley Rodrigues Pouru Chisti also winning the 1,400m Diabolic Handicap by a wide margin. Jockey Surjit Singh rode a sensible race on the top-weighted runner, in spite being drawn 13. Surprisingly, in the last three meetings, all of Rodrigues horses have been drawn on the far-side track. What a coincidence?

Bharath`s heavily fancied, Lochnivar (Sandesh), too, gave the impression of being under-done. The horse was taken on a start-to-finish mission but went down meekly to Shafiq Khan`s Bang Bang (Afzal Khan), who cashed in on to his monsoon season`s form while winning the Robert Bruce Handicap.

Daniel David-trained Tangaloomaa (Dashrath), also a favourite, was hard-pressed to beat the Sarfraz Khan-schooled Words (apprentice Ranidan Singh) in the Ivanoe Handicap after some tussle inside the last furlong. David`s Annie Oakley (apprentice Dheeraj Singh) was a good third in the race.
