Battalion records a comprehensive win in Kabini Cup

  November 18 , 2016

Neil Darashah trained Battalion recorded a comprehensive win in the 1400 metres Kabini Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. The speedy son of Phoenix Tower who had won three races in a row in Ooty including the Derby, was off-colour in his only run during the Summer Season, bounced back, controlling the race from the start and winning with something to spare.

Jockey Zervan unhesitatingly took Battalion to the front and the lesser fancied runner always had things under control as none in the fray were inclined to challenge her foray in front. Jockey Trevor Patel on favourite Siobhan rode a rather indifferent race because the filly is a known front-runner but the jockey restrained her and fell back to the rear group despite being most advantageously placed. He failed to get an even run for the filly who eventually was brought wide into contention but after conceding enormous ground to the eventual winner. Battalion looked a winner all the way in the straight with Feliciana running on from behind to take the runner up berth ahead of Siobhan.

The season`s first race for two-year-olds saw betting coming strongly on Turf Star and Phoenix Falcon. Suraj Narredu took his brother Rajesh Narredu trained Phoenix Falcon to the front and the Manjri Stud Farm bred colt stayed put in front and easily held off the challenge of Turf Star. Chemical Romance was third but should be better off for this exercise.

Ganapathy trained Magistero had been a failed favourite in his last run. Now taking on more modest lot of horses, the chances of Magistero got enhanced and the expectation proved to be correct in the 1400 metres Kokkarebellur Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Magistero won start to finish, swamping the opposition by a widening margin of eight lengths over Cape Cross who continues to find one better with regular consistency. Buscadero was third.

Salazaar was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1400 metres Adichunchanagiri Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The favourite ran into all sorts of problems, did not get a good position, cut an erratic course approaching the final bend but still was good enough to cover huge ground in the straight and get the better of Cadillac Sky to win the race by a neck. The race was eventual with jockey Ryan Marshall on fancied runner African Emperor suffering a fall at the jump out. African Emperor is known to be troublesome at the gates. Golden Bow shaped like a winner though the rider less African Emperor in front was impeding his progress. Though he enjoyed the lead going into the final furlong, he was pressed close home by both Cadillac Sky and Salazaar. The last named could put his neck in front at the finish. The lower division of the race saw Secret Pursuit enjoying strong favouritism. The favourite missed the kick and had enormous leeway to cover in the straight. Her aggressive finish enabled her to get the runner-up berth from a difficult position. Handsome Stash who raced in a handy striking position behind Havelock Princess, bolted to the front inside the final furlong and stretched away for a stylish win which suggested that a repeat win is possible.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Pallas recorded a facile win in the 1600 metres Talkad Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Backed strongly to record the third win of his career, Pallas did not disappoint, collaring the front-running Sang Royal in the straight and speeding away for a comfortable win. Sang Royal led from the start and put up a stiff resistance before being overhauled by the eventual winner. Sang Royal slackened close home to finish off the frame. Swiss Eagle was a notable second ahead of late rallying Back of Beyond. Sang Royale reportedly burst her blood vessels.

Apprentice jockey Nazerul Alam guided Neil Darashah trained Luc Divine to a narrow win over Takecover in the 1200 metres Beloved Prince Plate, a race for rated 15 to 35. The apprentice jockey let Scorching to take over the running as he waited for his time in the third or fourth position along the rails. Luck Divine was brought into the fray at the top of the straight and the fancied runner got the measure of front-running Scorching and established a useful lead which held him in good stead as Takeover finished full of running. Takecover (late Pull The Plug) has been running consistently without being able to break the jinx. There was noticeable betting on Chicago to come in place. The four-year-old filly was tailed off last but covered ground in the straight to just about nose out Arziki to save place money.

Imtiaz Khan trained Love Is Life who had twice finished second best at Mysore, made amends with an easy win in the 1600 metres Bellary Plate, a race for horses rated 15 o 35. Srinath was content to keep Love Is Life relaxed behind as Trojan set the pace. Well into the straight, Love Is Life easily overhauled the front-runners to win pulling up by over four lengths. There was tight finish for minor placings, with Winsomeness nosing out Match Point for the runner-up berth. Trojan too was not far behind.

The day`s opener was by rank outsider White Snowdrops who fought a resolute battle with front-running Reverberating before gaining the edge in the final stages of the race to win the 1400 metres Silicon Valley Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Don`tworrymonday finished on strongly and grabbed the second place by a whisker in the three-horse photo finish that resulted at the finishing point.
