Smile Stone reclaims glory after longish break

  November 19 , 2016

Sharat Kumar trained Smile Stone who had been running fair and indifferent races for the last one year, finally got the set where he could assert his supremacy as he came from way off the pace to get the better of Havelock Prince to win the 1200 metres Hyderabad Silver Vase, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. Punters found winner-picking hazardous as horses which hadn`t won for a long period, ran above expectations after below par performances.

There were several horses which were running for the first time in the feature event which was for horses rated 75 and above. Gold Berg had proved to be a speedy customer but hadn`t run for a long time because of physical niggles. Since he was a carrying postage stamp weight on his back, he was one of the better fancied runners to win along with Coldstream. Smile Stone, the most experienced horse in the fray with experience of winning graded races, was also in the betting.

Gold Berg who had an apprentice on his back, went to the front at a good clip with Havelock Prince for company while Smile Stone who was drawn on the extreme outside was taken to the inside and settled in the rear group as the top weight had always relished being ridden off the pace. The runners were spaced out behind the pace-setters. Rounding the final turn, Gold Berg fought briefly before weakening giving way for Havelock Prince who then shaped to cause a big upset. However, his intentions were put paid by Smile Stone who literally was a giant among pigmies as his terrific turn of foot in the final furlong took him past the battling horses in front for an easy win. Mickey House who had raced up with the pace nosed out Coldstream for the third place.

Neil Darashah trained Attorney General looked a cut above the rest in the 1200 metres Sohna Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 45 to 65 by virtue of his performances with some top-quality horses of this centre. Though he was essaying arguably running a furlong short, he was nevertheless backed with conviction to land the spoils. After Krieger went at a scorching speed which was to prove his undoing, Attorney General came into strong contention in the final furlong after a getting a run between two horses. Attorney General and Life Awaits were engaged in stiff battle for supremacy. Even as the issue appeared confined between these two, Integrated who hadn`t won for a considerable period of time, found his bearings and flew on the wide outside to get the nod in the final stride of the race from Life Awaits and Attorney General. A short head each separated the first three runners. French jockey Cedric Segeon is still to get the hang of racing in Bangalore and surely a more experienced jockey could have landed the spoils on the favourite.

Aravind Ganapathy trained Majestic Style had let down as a favourite at Mysore with a start to finish attempt, tiring out in the end. As a failed favourite, he deserved another strong support to make amends in the 1200 metres G Krishnappa Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. However, Powerscourt got larger support. In the event, Majestic Style who was loitering in the rear, covered ground in the straight with great alacrity and in the final furlong, just cantered past the front runners to win in great style. Mariko necked out Stellar Ambition who had stolen a march in the final furlong. Multi App was another who hadn`t won for quite some time. Well supported to prevail in the lower division of the race, Multi App stormed ahead inside the final 200 metres to win from Hector who had an interfered passage. Hector could have been right there but for the fact that he failed to get a clear run at a crucial stage of the race.

Adulation was another horse to find his bearings after a longish interval. The Darius Byramji trainee was ridden out by jockey Srinath to clinch a thriller from Ark Royal in the Saddle Up Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Ark Royal and Adulation fought all the way in the final furlong with the latter getting the nod in the bob of the heads. Mission Blue obliged expectations of saving place money. Srinath also drove out trainer Gregory Sandhu`s Heaven And Earth to a final stride win. Favourite Wonder Woman shaped to win the lower division of the race as she had a useful cushion going into the final furlong. Heaven And Earth gained ground on the wide outside and despite the left-handed whipping of Srinath, the filly continued to drift further towards the edge of the grass track. But the filly did enough to get a short-head verdict from the favourite. Emancipation came up with a late flourish to take the third spot ahead of Saffron Intense who overcame a sluggish start to finish fourth.

Satish Narredu trained Paradiso was another long shot to oblige during the day`s action. Ballerophon was the favourite to win the 1100 metres Half A Crown Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35 but the favourite was a beaten cause well before the race came on the boil. Paradiso who went on a start to finish mission, just about held on to win from late rallying High Voltage. Scenic Park was third. Ganapathy trained Queen of Windsor had an amazing change in fortunes in the lower division of the race. In the hands of apprentice jockey R Manjunath, Queen of Windsor who was at the tail end of the field at the final bend covered places along the rails and then was angled out in the final furlong. The filly flew home to win to win by a neck from Look Out. Golden Friend who was in the hunt, weakened to finish third.

Warren Singh led in a winner in Bangalore after a longish gap when Extremelydangerous held off the late bid of Active Grey to land the spoils in the 1600 metres Linganamakki Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Favourite Campfire was third. Extremelydangerous returned rich dividends on the tote.
