Azzurro swamps a meek opposition

  December 2 , 2016

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Azzurro was presented with a meek opposition in the 1800 metres Ashoka Chakra Cup, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. The accomplished performer made light of the task, swamping the opposition to add to his bag of victories. The opposition consisted of horses of inferior merit and thus the task for Azzurro became one of completing the formalities.

Judging by the quality of horses that Azzurro had beaten in his career, it was understandable that the odds on the five-year-old to win were miserly. Star Formation whose best effort was finishing second best in the Indian 1000 Guineas last year hasn`t been the same horse that had given hopes of turning into a useful performer. Star Formation led the field with Flamboyance in chase while Azzurro was relaxed in the third position followed by the others, with Blazing Touch bringing up the rear. Rounding the final turn, Azzurro was asked to quicken and the progeny of Azamour steadily gained ascendancy to go storming clear in the final furlong. Let The Lion Roar showed intent but lacked the power to make a difference to the outcome and was beaten to the third place by Blazing Touch who came from the last position to nose out his adversary. Jersey Wonder who was essaying a trip reckoned to be too long for him, ran way below par, finishing down the field.

David Allan`s riding made a difference to the outcome of 1200 metres Kentucky Plate, a race for three-year-old maidens where Zafran extricated herself from a tight situation to score a scintillating win over debutant Six Degrees. Inside the final 300 metres, Zafran who was making a run along the inside was hampered for a clear run. David waited with the lesser fancied runner till the gap materialised and the moment he got one, he was quick to push his horse to take the opening. His forceful riding ensured that Zafran shot ahead with 100 metres left in the race and the cushion that the filly built helped. Six Degrees who is bred as a full brother to the celebrated sprinter Speed Six came up with a powerful run but found the front-runner reach the safety of the winning post. This run benefit should help Six Degrees to make amends next time out. Grecian Light necked out Star Line to save place money.

Neil Darashah trained Hostess fought out a resolute battle with Afore before managing to pull off a narrow win in the hands of K G Steyn to win the 1400 metres Red Baron Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Afore had the edge till the final moments of the race but Hostess managed to put her head in front at the all-important end to win at nourishing odds. Yellow Zone ran on from a long way back to take the third position. Favourite Amazing Skill performed way below par to finish in the ruck. The lower division of the race saw another Darashah ward My Transcripts provide visiting jockey Cedric Segeon with his first win. My Transcripts who raced in a handy second shot ahead inside the final 350 metres and won the race quite capably. Attractive Bay came from way back to edge past Goodwill Warrior to get the runner-up berth.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Ayrton had the benefit of a good forward run and looked a cut above the rest in the 1400 metres Hoysala Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Ayrton enjoyed strong support in the betting. As is his wont, Ayrton produced a late flourish to measure the front-running Super Success to land the spoils. Super Success was third. Despite running in the higher category, Rajesh Narredu trained Native Elements had no problem in winning the lower division of the race. Native Elements moved up well from the outside draw to take a forward position and in the straight, steadily gained ascendancy and had the race firmly in his grasp in the final furlong. Mariko finished second best ahead of Back of Beyond.

Suleiman Attaollahi`s Sans Escale overwhelmed the opposition in the 1200 metres Dharwar Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Jockey Trevor Patel had no hesitation in taking the favourite to the front and Sans Escale enjoyed her foray in front to check in well clear of Santorini Secret. Zafrina who raced up with the field failed to find an extra gear and plodded on to be a tame third.
