Alaindair asserts his class with emphatic victory

By: Frankel   December 4 , 2016

Altamash Ahmed trained Alaindair has been an outstanding performer all through his career. Yet again the five-year-old asserted his class in no uncertain manner by swamping the opposition in the Gr 2 Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia Trophy, a terms race for horses three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. Alaindair gave weight and a thrashing to all his rivals as he made the race no contest well before the final furlong.

The odds quoted on Alaindair which was little more than even money must be considered generous as Alaindair had scored a string of wins at Bangalore during the summer season and had gone down fighting to India`s horse of the year Desert God by a narrow margin in the President of India Gold Cup at Hyderabad. The horses in the fray were all pretty run of the mill and stood no chance against Alaindair. The only way Alaindair could have lost was by the champion running way below his ability.

The Unicorn did the job of pace setting with Booker Jones in close attendance ahead of B Fifty-Two, Chef D`Oeuvre and the rest, with Alaindair eased in about the seventh position. Colombiana was sluggish from the gates which has become a habit with this versatile performer. Srinath saw an opportunity to get a ground-saving along the rails approaching the final bend and he took courage to attempt the passage along the rails as The Unicorn was racing two horses wide from the rails. Alaindair swiftly took the gap and had come away from the pack in no time. By the final furlong, Alaindair had gone away and Srinath could ease the horse to win on the momentum. Jack Frost ran on from behind to take the second spot ahead of B Fifty-Two who nosed out Booker Jones to snatch the third place.

The 1600 metres Roedl & Partner Trophy, a race for horses rated40 to 66, produced an exciting finish. San Martino who led boldly in the front had stolen a march in the final furlong when She Is Special began to make her bid. It looked as though the front-runner would scrape home but She Is Special managed to cover the leeway in the nick of time and managed to put her neck in front at the all-important end in the hands of persevering Sandesh. Et Voila was out of depth in this company and ended a tame third.

The 1200 metres Helm India Trophy, a race for horses rated 53 to 79, a newly introduced category, saw long shot Korol beat the opposition pointless. Korol had run over a mile and half in his previous outing which was the reason why his chances were not considered good over a sprint. However, Korol came through with a lightning run down the final furlong to go storming clear to record a smashing win. Traherne was a well-beaten second ahead of Eternalinspiration.

Imtiaz Sait trained Summer Rays proved too good in the 1200 metres HDFC-Ergo Trophy, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Summer Rays appeared spot on for the race, bouncing clear with 200 metres left in the race to win by a comfortable margin of four lengths over late-rallying Cerrado and Stallone who raced up with the field but failed to find an extra gear.

Flamboyant Flame hadn`t won for a long time after a promising win during the last Mumbai season. Now changed from Dallas Todywalla to Malesh Narredu, Flamboyant Flame bounced back to win the 1000 metres Lufthansa Senator Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 in tremendous fashion. Flamboyant Flame skipped clear inside the final 300 metres and was in no danger of being caught up with any of the runners from behind as she checked in by a margin of five lengths over favourite Gran Paradiso who was flat-footed. Speedo saved place money.

Cooji Katrak trained Judicious shaped to record an easy win in the 1400 metres Bayer Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Judicious stormed clear in the final furlong. Closer home, there was a cavalry charge with Glorious Eyes being the best of the fast-finishing horses, losing by a nose to the front-runner. Beach Game came up with an eye-catching effort and can win next time out if there is an intent. Sumaaq too ran suggestively in the fourth position.

Prince of Heart held on to win the 1800 metres VFL Wolfburg Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest category. Fancied Winter Renaissance did not get a good start as she trailed the field till turning for home. Prince of Heart who was handily placed at the top of the straight was put in top gear by jockey Neeraj Rawal and the four-year-old progeny of Dancing Forever quickly went bouncing clear. The lead established held him in good stead as Winter Renaissance covered the leeway remarkably and came very close to toppling the front-runner. However, she ran out of ground in the end. Oscillation was third.
