Galiat brings off a stunning upset in Million

By: Tippu Sultan   December 11 , 2016

Donald Netto trained Galiat brought off a stunning upset in the 1400 metres Northern Dancer Million, a terms race for three-year-olds and upwards, the feature event of Sunday`s races that were gone through at Malakpet. Galiat`s win surely came against the run of expectations as the field featured Sprinters Cup winner Adam and the consistent Satellite in the fray.

Adam had come to race at Hyderabad on the back of an impressive mock race back home at Mumbai. Considering his impeccable credentials and the fact that the terms of the race favoured him, his win was taken for granted. If at all Adam were to taste defeat, then there was owner mate Satellite to cover up for him as the latter had also proved his strengths on the Malakpet track. However, the outcome of the race took everyone by surprise proving that smaller the field, greater the uncertainty and in racing nothing can be taken for granted.

Jockey Louis Beuzelin who has been riding with great success at Malakpet and brought quality to riding talent, had no hesitation in taking Galiat to the front over the seven-furlong trip. Galiat enjoyed an uncontested lead as the riders of Satellite and Adam were content to race behind with Vijay Vidhata in the fourth position with Carlton bringing up the tail. Beuzelin tactically did a wise thing by establishing a useful lead immediately on turning for home which held him in good stead. The cushion helped the cause of the front-runner immensely as Satellite and Adams in between the front-runner and the former came through with strong efforts only to be frustrated by Galiat reaching the safety of the winning post. A short head and head separated the first three finishers.

Beuzelin was also successful on Netto`s another ward Net Champ who swamped the opposition in the 1400 metres Umraolal Gupta Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 66 to 90. After tracking Crown Royal, well into the straight, Beuzelin pushed Net Champ to take over the running. The progeny of Burden of Proof at once accelerated well and went storming clear to win with a great deal of deal. King of Pop and Queen of the Stars went in chase but found the front-runner too good for comfort.

Hilton Sequeira trained Rubyonrails was a facile winner of the 1200 metres Tribute Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 46 to 70. The well-backed Rubyonrails tracked Rock Heights deep into the straight before shaking off the front-runner. Rubyonrails stormed clear in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of four lengths over Rock Heights who stayed on to take the second position ahead of Lopamudra. Mangipelly Satyanarayana trained Exclusive Beauty shaped to win the lower division of the race but was floored by Oathofyourdaughter who showed a good burst of speed in the final stages of the race to clinch a narrow win. Symbol of Pride was third.

Lesser fancied runner from Anupam Sharma stable, Act In Time rallied well along the rails and collared the front-running favourite Sacrifice in the final 200 metres and sped away for a comfortable win in the 1200 metres Bonzer Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Sacrifice surrendered meekly when Act In Time essayed her challenge. The rest of the runners were far behind with Pegasus occupying the third position. Vittal Deshmukh trained Astra stormed clear of the pack with 200 metres left in the race and won the lower division of the race in tremendous fashion. Poll Promise and In Command occupied the next two slots.

Beuzelin drove out Brilliant to get the better of Undu Undhu Undu to win the 1600 metres Crown Treasure Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Undu Undu Undu cruised into the lead on turning for home but could not breathe easy as Brilliant put up a strong challenge. Under the forceful riding of Beuzelin, Brilliant got stronger close home to record an easy win. Vijay Vidyut was third.

The run benefit helped Gladstone prevail in the 1100 metres Chaitanya Ratham Plate (Div I), a race for maiden two-year-olds. Gladstone led from the start and skipped clear of the rest to win in fine fashion from Bayrd and True Hymn. Srinivas trained Gladiator Royale won the lower division of the race comfortably leading in front. Sharp Eye was second ahead of Lost And Found. The last named found the gap closing in the final stages of the race as Gladiator Royale rolled onto the rails. Jockey C Alford who rode the third placed horse, objected against Naresh who was astride the winner for causing interference which cost him the race. The objection was overruled as it did not have much scope for anything other than being thrown out.
