Exclusive Wind prevails in final strides in feature

By: Tippu Sultan   December 12 , 2016

Anupam Sharma trained Exclusive Wind produced a scintillating burst of speed in the hands of up and coming apprentice jockey B R Kumar and managed to edge out Double Chatter to win the 1400 metres Gajasimha Rao Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 46 to 70, the feature event of Monday`s races held at Malakpet. Races ran kindly for those chasing the favourites as most races were dominated by these horses.

Awesome Approach had reeled off three wins in a row and then failed to make a mark in the Guineas. Now back in the more modest handicap company, the Hilton Sequeira trained Awesome Approach was expected to resume her winning ways. However, the favourite flopped miserably. After Bharat King led the field into the straight followed by Mirfield, Double Chatter who was lying in wait, pounced on these two runners and went sailing ahead. Mirfield was not inclined to give up and joined the battle of attrition. The final furlong saw these two horses fight the way to the finish but closer home, the complexion of the race changed with Kumar goading Exclusive Wind to produce that bit extra. The long shot devoured the leeway and went past the battling duo with a measure of comfort. Double Chatter just about nosed out Mirfield for the runner-up berth. Awesome Approach, despite being positioned well, failed to change gears and was out of the reckoning well before the race came on the boil.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Mr Baahubali has given indication of becoming a top-class sprinter of the centre. Backed spiritedly to win the 1200 metres Nirmal Plate, a race for horses rated 66 to 90, Mr Baahubali had a hesitant start and appeared in some bother when Numinous spurted clear in the final furlong. However, Mr Baahubali produced a powerful effort to measure the front-runner and spare a length at the finish. Mr Baahubali is in great form and should win again if he is restricted to a sprint. Commanding Boy was finishing on well and took the third place.

Leo D`Silva trained Great Glory was running in a weak company and the filly`s chances were considered excellent in the 1200 metres Gangotri Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Apprentice jockey A A Vikrant had no problem in taking the favourite to the front and the progeny of Lucifer Sam kicked clear in the straight to record an emphatic win over Shandaar and Rohini. There was solid support for Prep One to pull it off but the horse hung in badly in the straight and the jockey had considerable difficulty in riding out the filly and had to be content with the fourth position.

Mangipelly Satyanarayana trained Ragas Ajalias had lost last time out after leading for most part of the journey and based on that effort and the fact that the trainer claimed 3.5 kgs allowance through Kunal Bunde saw the horse being backed heavily in the ring in a race where the jockeys were not allowed to carry the whip. Avantika had her share of supporters. Within the first furlong, Bunde took Ragas Ajalias to the front and the filly just about lasted out to win from fast-finishing Avantika and Scooby Dooby Do. Avantika was squeezed out from a forward position by Boppanna on Space Ship and the fancied runner fell to the rear. Beuzelin had to work his passage from behind and though the filly covered lot of leeway, the front-runner reached the safety of the post before she could be caught up with. Beuzelin was obviously angry with the interference caused by Boppanna who is still raw and inexperienced. The jockey gave vent to his anger by slapping the jockey in the weighing room. The Stewards who held an inquiry after the last race suspended Beuzelin for two race days besides fining him Rs 20,000 for his improper conduct.

The well backed Prime Time had no problem in winning the lower division of the Flirting Vision Plate. Prime Time got the race in her grasp in the final furlong and was comfortably ahead of Royal Dynamite and Olympic Hero. Sweet March who received noticeable support in the ring, was never in the hunt. The riderless Matica posed a few problems for most of the contestants as she came in the path of several horses whose jockeys had to be wary of the riderless horse.

Faisal Hassan trained Southern Crown claimed the 1200 metres Classic Style Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds quite easily with a start to finish dash. Favourite Far Sight made a strong effort to catch up with the front-runner but Southern Crown proved too good in the end. Lady In Lace edged past Lady Admiral to get the third place.

Lesser fancied Apache Gal, in the hands of apprentice jockey Gopal Singh, led all the way and managed to stay clear of late rallying favourite Perfection in the 1400 metres Malvado Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Dolce was third. Suraj Narredu had to be on his guard in driving out favourite The Blue to a narrow win in the lower division of the race over fast-finishing Vijays Delight. The Blue who got the better of Roma Rouge in the final furlong was hard-pressed by Vijays Delight but the favourite clung on to the lead grimly.

Laxman Singh trained Aragonda Princess managed to get all the spaces in the final furlong and managed to overhaul Masti in the shadow of the post to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Mirza Zunnur Ahmed Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Aragonda Princess was obviously the superior horse in the fray and as such could accomplish a difficult task given the fact that he had considerable leeway to cover in the final stages of the race. Cash Landing was a well-beaten third.
