Smile Stone maintains his zest to record another win

  December 17 , 2016

Sharat Kumar trained Smile Stone has been a versatile and consistent performer and despite the obvious disadvantages imposed on a horse which always comes from way off the pace and misses the target often has been winning at fair intervals. Taking on a modest lot of horses, Smile Stone responded well to apprentice jockey M Naveen as he came from the back of the field to record a comfortable win in the 1400 metres Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races.

The race had an open look about it with the odds indicating that it was difficult to pinpoint any horse as having an outstanding chance. Super Sunshine who had impressed in a mock race came in for support but the got-abroad four-year-old gelding did not jump out well from the gates and was a lost cause thereafter. Havelock Prince too sat at the time of jumping out and his chances too thus were effectively sealed. Dubai One set off at a fast clip in front, followed by Pearl Reward, Hillsboro, Cold Stream, Dazzling Bay and the rest while Smile Stone was in the penultimate position. Dubai One kicked on merrily in the straight but his front-running took its toll as he faltered in the final furlong. Even as Coldstream and Dazzling Bay were beginning to show up, Smile Stone came up with a patented late burst of speed on the wide outside and surged ahead for a smashing win ahead of Dazzling Bay and Coldstream. Dubai One stayed on to finish fourth.

M P Mahaesh trained Legacy Dream recorded a fine win in the 1800 metres Chickmagalur Nirvanappa Shetty Nanjamma TMP Cup, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Towering Heights and Admiral One were the preferred ones in the race. Admiral One looked the likely winner as she shot ahead in the final furlong and had a good cushion. Legacy Dream who was brought into contention on the wide outside with a flourishing run, gathered momentum closer home in the hands of jockey Jagadeesh and overhauled the front-runner in the shadow of the post. Towering Heights was third without showing any spark. Incidentally, Puttanna who retired as a trainer due to health reasons was also a part owner of the winning horse and led the horse along with his cousin Mahaesh, the trainer.

Prasanna Kumar`s Side Winder had imposing credentials in the 1200 metres Ruia Stud Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65 having run a close fourth to Integrated in his last run. Besides that, he had also won back to back during the summer season. Side Winder was the on-money favourite to win the race and he won uncontested start to finish in the hands of jockey Arshad Alam. Virat and Rich Revival were the horses to finish behind the winner while horses which were reckoned to be in with a fighting chance gave a poor account of themselves. Padmanabhan trained Lord Darlington had no problem in winning the lower division of the race, swamping the opposition with ease. After a hesitant start, Lord Darlington raced keen, took the turn wide to avoid the horses dropping back, cruised ahead of the front pack easily to go clear in the final furlong for a facile win. There was a cluster finish behind with Amazing Redd getting the runner-up berth ahead of Havelock Princess and Perfectebony.

The biggest disappointment of the day was the flop show by Arjun Mangalorkar trained Six Degrees in the 1200 metres Amathos Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Bred as full sister to the celebrated Speed Six, the progeny of Burden of Proof was expected to give a decisive show after the benefit of a race run but the favourite was in distress well before the final turn and looked a beaten horse long way from home. Long shot Areca Cruise held off Day Flower by a neck to win the race in the final strides. Six Degrees was a disappointing third. Dominic trained Tamara shot ahead in the final furlong and had no problem in winning the lower division of the race from Roaring Thunder who found foot after the cause had been lost. Queenofgoodtimes saved place money.

Manohar trained Masters Glory had served notice of an early win and it came as no surprise that the six-year-old was the recipient of solid betting. Masters Glory circled around the field at the final bend to come into strong contention. Masters Glory easily overtook the front-running Ocean Park, to win by a widening margin of five lengths. One To Note held off Extemelydangerous to get the third place.

Favourite Atlantic City came up with a good rally well in time to get the better of Island Pearl to land the spoils in the day`s opener, the 1100 metres Gulbarga Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. The Jaguar also came up with a late effort but was found short in the end.
