Kazuri survives objection to win day’s feature

By: Stay Thirsty   December 28 , 2016

Girinath trained Kazuri just about lasted out to win the 1400 metres Rajendravilas Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. Kazuri survived a scare for the second time in the Stewards room as jockey Irvan Singh tried to win the race by raising on objection about the outward drift of the winner which caused him to change course besides his horse being the victim of being bumped. The objection, however, was overruled.

Excelonce was widely expected to repeat considering the impressive nature of his win in his last outing. Jockey Shiva Kumar who gets to ride a winner once in long intervals, had Kazuri leading all the way, with Excelonce racing along the rails in the third position. Inside the final two furlongs, Excelonce was angled out to make his challenge to the front-runner. Though Kazuri held the lead all the way, he did come out of the rails and drifted to the centre of the course. The fact that Excelonce too did not keep a straight course and the interference was not severe enough to prevent the jockey from riding out the horse was the reason why the objection by Irvan Singh against Shiva Kumar did not favour with the Stewards. Premier Ace was third.

Cedric Segeon drove out lesser fancied Ascendent to get the better of favourite Star Style in the final moments of the race to win the 1200 metres P M Channabasavanna Memorial Trophy, a race for maiden two-year-olds, the only cup event of the day. Ascendent did not get a good start as he did not show initial speed and was in the penultimate position even as Star Style was eased in second position as Lord Iisley led the field from the start. The pace of the race was slow and Ascendent could brush up to be in touch with the favourite in quick time. Rounding the final turn, Star Style took over the running with Ascendent hot on his heels. The duo fought out the length of the final furlong before Ascendent managed to surge ahead to win by half a length. The Imposter was third while the rest finished far behind.

Carisa who had finished a suggestive third last time out, came in for spirited betting in the 1400 metres Nandidurga Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The odds came tumbling down on Carisa who it was clear from the odds slump, would be a serious jobber. Ascendency was the favourite. The favourite managed to prevail as Carisa failed to find an advantageous position early on and by the time the six-year-old mare warmed up to the task and began to cover up the leeway, the race was in the safe keeping of Ascendency who was ideally positioned to have a decisive say. Carisa ended up a good second ahead of Ice Weapon who was relegated to the third position close home. Lesser fancied Stellenbosch from the stables of trainer Nataraj seized a winning lead inside the final furlong and spurted away for an easy win in the lower division of the race. Archimedes and Queen occupied the next two slots on the frame while favourite Here`s Abbey was not spotted at the busy end.

Feroz Khan trained Country`s Sher got a lovely run along the rails and the long shot made an excellent rally in the final furlong to win the 1200 metres Taj Mahal Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Bryant Park who was well positioned to launch an assault, drifted out under pressure and lost a possible winning chance and settled for the second slot. Wolf Rock was third while the fancied Pretty Hot and Kallistrate disappointed. Saddam Hussain induced a brisk run from another Feroz Khan ward Sans Frontiers who managed to win the lower division of the race in the closing strides of the race. Favourite Be Ready led for a long while but inside the final 100 metres, a cluster of horses pounced on the four-year-old who was making his debut. In a trice, the complexion of the race changed, with Sans Frontiers sealing the race in his favour ahead of Ice Brown, Point and Dazzle Away.

Sharavanan trained Touch of Romance made a good rally in the final furlong to win the 1200 metres Pertigalete Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category to get the better of Samay Balwan. The latter had the lead in the final furlong but he drifted out of a straight course which hurt his chances. Touch of Romance produced a good gallop to have the race in his grasp with about 100 metres left in the race. Napolean Dynamite was third. Jockey Madhu Babu got a favourable position on Always United from the wide outside draw and the fancied runner bounced clear in the straight by measuring the front-running Ophira with ease and then drawing clear of the rest. Time To Time came up with a late bid but failed to make a dent on the front-runner. Vrajanandan held off favourite Delta Delight to save place money.
