War Envoy pips Reference at the post

  December 30 , 2016

Jockey Y S Srinath who was in his elements, booting home four winners, was at his persevering best on Sriram Komandur trained War Envoy in the 1400 metres RWITC Trophy, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. The day`s races were dominated by three top jockeys, as apart from Srinath, Trevor Patel and Suraj Narredu won two races each in the eight-event card.

Rashid Byramji trained Reference looked to have an excellent chance of winning the feature event as his credentials were better than that of War Envoy. Suraj Narredu took Reference on a start to finish mission but could not sustain his lead to the post as he was strongly pressed by War Envoy in the final furlong. The duo fought a thrilling battle with Srinath`s power packed riding ensuring a narrow win for War Envoy. Amber Crown was third.

The day`s other highlight, the 1600 metres Hampi Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, had an open look about it as none looked to have a decisive edge. Quaker Ridge was widely expected to improve on her forward effort and have a bold show. Sagrada was withdrawn at the gates on veterinary grounds. Torch Bearer was next in demand though this full brother to the celebrated Desert God hadn`t won for a long time. Jersey Wonder had credentials though his last run which was unexpectedly poor did not get him too many enthusiastic supporters. Trevor Patel chose to keep Jersey Wonder way off the pace and this suited the progeny of Burden of Proof brilliantly as the lesser fancied runner produced a powerful burst of speed in the final furlong to edge past Quaker Ride who had shot into the lead. Jersey Wonder surely relished the change in tactics and Trevor was thus able to exploit the short burst of speed to maximum advantage. Secret Dimension who raced up with the field, stayed on to finish third.

Satish Narredu trained Tutankhamun won the 1400 metres Sriharikota Plate, a race for two-year-olds in emphatic fashion, thereby advertising his ability as one of the better-quality horses seen thus far among first season runners. Despite running for the first time, Tutankhamun showed greater maturity and class when swamping the opposition. Srinath took Kambaku who had the benefit of a race run on a start to finish mission but in the homestretch, found himself inadequate when Tutankhamun began to essay his challenge. The favourite easily overhauled the front-runner and stretched away for a fine win. The style of victory suggests that this progeny of Phoenix Tower could prove himself to be a top-quality horse. Lycurgus ran on to finish third.

Havelock Princess had the credit of beating Battalion in the early part of her career but thereafter had failed to strike again. While Battalion had enhanced his credentials with an unbeaten run of five wins, Havelock Princess had stagnated. However, the filly had a very good chance of winning the 1200 metres Yadgir Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Havelock Princess had to be fully ridden out to contain the challenge of front-running Flotus who was shaping to bring off an upset. Srinath could extract that bit extra from the filly for last stride win. Daisy Duke held off Perfectebony to save place money. The filly surely would be better off tackling trips longer than a sprint. Zafran enjoyed an advantage over Siyouni in the lower division of the race though in their head-to-head clash last time out, the latter had held on to win. Now over an extended trip of six furlongs, Zafran had an edge. Siyouni led in earnest into the final furlong but under pressure, failed to sustain her foray in front and weakened to finish fourth. Zafran was driven out to take the lead by Trevor in the final furlong and his strong finish enabled the fancied runner to narrowly stave off the late flourish of Dagobert and Kapalua. A neck and nose separated the first three placed horses.

Gregory Sandhu trained Massive Dynamics was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the hope that the progeny of Arazan would record an encore in the 1400 metres Kitty Bank Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Jockey Srinath took no chances as he had Massive Dynamics in a handy second position as Brunaldo did the pace-setting job. Massive Dynamics took over the running soon on straightening for the run in for home with Freestyle in serious chase. The favourite however always had the edge and comfortably managed to stay ahead of Freestyle who was relentless in her challenge. Summer Star was a late rallying third.

Irfan Ghatala trained Fiorenzo won the 1600 metres Amber Regent Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, thwarting a strong challenge from Lightning Attack. Though Lightning Attack had the first run on his opponents, Suraj brought Fiorenzo into contention soon after straightening for home along the rails and managed to slip ahead. Though Lightning Attack essayed a strong challenge, Fiorenzo had enough legs to reach the safety of the winning post. Flirting Eyes ran on to finish third ahead of Mission Blue.

Srinath drove out the well backed What A Nice Man to a comfortable start to finish win in the 1200 metres BARI Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Flying Prince was some distance behind in second position ahead of Dontworrymonday.
