Cameron justifies strong favouritism

By: Tippu Sultan   January 23 , 2017

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Cameron justified the strong favouritism with a decisive win over Galiat in the 1600 metres Qutab Shahi Million, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of races held on Monday at Malakpet. Cameron had to be ridden out vigorously by Suraj Narredu to get the desired result as Galiat put up a gallant fight.

There were five runners in the fray consisting of four local horses and one from Bangalore. Since the local challengers had seen better days, it was obvious that Cameron would have things her way even though the mile trip could prove sharp. Rio Rojo who was the horse of the season in monsoon, did the job of pace-setting before losing steam to bow out of contention in the straight. Galiat who was well positioned then began to assert his supremacy but closer home, the hard-ridden Cameron bridged the gap and managed to overhaul the front-runner to win by a length. The best performed horse in the fray, Machiavellianism had the terms of the race in his favour except the fact that his form is on the decline and the long miles that he has logged in his career, have taken the edge off him. Machiavellianism however earned his maintenance money.

Laxman Singh trained Naazaan won the 1800 metres RCTC Cup, a race for horses rated 66 to 90 in a tight finish from Western Wind. Naazaan was backed down spiritedly to oblige despite the fact Western Wind had the form to be a force to reckon with. Naazaan who had the first run on his opponents, opened a useful cushion and though it was diminishing fast in the face of a powerful run unleashed by Western Wind, the front-runner held on to win by a neck. Greek Star was third.

M Srinivas Reddy trained Vallee Secret made a winning debut in the 1100 metres Republic Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Favourite Asteria took a while to warm up but by that time, Valee Sceptre had stolen a march and won with a measure of comfort. Asteria failed to live up to expectations and battled hard to get the runner-up berth from True Hymn. The lower division of the race saw Deshmukh trained Money Time come in for strong support based on extensive preparation and the benefit of an impressive mock race in the lower division of the race. Money Time went on a start to finish mission and led for the most part of the straight before Jumeriah Express, under the strong riding of Suraj Narredu, managed to get the better of the favourite in the final 100 metres. Brookwood was third.

Anupam Sharma specialises in winning at long odds. Sher Afgan who was coming back in distance and hence was neglected in the betting ring as Super Grey was the recipient of sustained betting in the 1400 metres Best Of Fun Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Sher Afgan put paid to the market expectations as he slipped along the rails and marched decisively to the winning post. Own Battle who held the charge till overhauled by the eventual winner found Sher Afgan took strong for comfort. Golden Image was third.
Another lesser fancied runner from Anupam Sharma`s tables, Dhool Ka Phool had finished a noteworthy second last time out but went to the post at nourishing odds in the Chowmathalla Cup, a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Cloud Dancer was widely expected to have a bold show as evidenced by the support in the ring. Dhool Ka Phool fought off a resolute battle to get the better of Time To Climb to land the spoils. Man Of The Series managed to keep the challenge of Cloud Dancer at bay to gain the third position.

Deshmukh trained Astra was a clear-cut favourite to win the 1100 metres Prince Pradeep Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Astra had the credentials to enjoy such a status. Suraj had Astra lead the field along the rails and the progeny of Phoenix Tower skipped away in the straight to record a convincing win over Fair And Square who held off late rallying Egyptian Wind and Rock Heights. Akash Vani was widely expected to record an encore in the lower division of the race but the former who led from the start was confronted with a powerful challenge from Camborne who bounced clear in the final stages of the race to win at long odds. Sprint Legend returned good dividends on place betting by finishing third.
Cruiser was the favourite to win the 1200 metres King Crown Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30 which has traditionally proved to be a minefield for punters trying to pick a winner. In keeping with the trend, Satheesh trained Magical Skill was the winner at nourishing odds. The progeny of Ontario produced a powerful burst of speed in the final furlong to go clear of the opposition for an emphatic win. Racing Ruler headed Yes Baby to gain the runner-up berth while favourite Cruiser was not seen at the busy end. Shivalik Arrow was a notable fourth despite looking far from ready.
