Script Writer pulls off a big upset in Super Mile

By: Stay Thirsty   January 11 , 2017

Monnappa trained Script Writer brought off a big upset in the 1600 metres Mysore Super Mile Championship, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. Script Writer showed a quantum improvement in her performance capabilities by beating Blazing Touch and the well performed Acclaimed albeit over a trip where the favourite hadn`t proved his worth on a consistent basis.

Acclaimed had performed well against his contemporaries and had even won the Fillies Championship at Hyderabad during his formative years over a mile. After that effort, he had been confined to shorter sprints where he accumulated a bagful of wins. The seven-year-old is steadily losing steam and finding the younger opponents hard to tackle and his wins have dried up considerably. However, since the opposition he was taking on was much inferior to the ones he had regularly faced, he was expected to make his presence felt even over a trip of a mile and accorded the status of being a favourite.

Ancient Title did the job of pace-setting with Acclaimed settled in the second position ahead of Script Writer, Blazing Touch, Lorenzo and Sea Lagoon. Rounding the final turn, Acclaimed got the better of Ancient Title and surged ahead. However, his domination in front was short-lived as Script Writer looked the likely winner when she began to move with determined strides. Acclaimed was overhauled by Script Writer inside the final 100 metres and the progeny of Whatsthescript held off the late rally of Blazing Touch to land the spoils. Acclaimed was relegated to the third position. Acclaimed appears to be on the decline and what went against her were both the mile-long trip and the fact that he is steadily losing his sharpness of younger days.

Santosh Rao trained Arrive had performed poorly when an apprentice rode her on the last occasion. This time out, Arshad Alam was brought in to ride the six-year-old mare in the higher class and as such, was quoted at lucrative odds to win the 1200 metres Karkala Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Gelignite was backed to make amends for failing last time out. Kazuri led from the start and though Gelignite appeared to have measured the front-runner in the final furlong, the favourite fell behind under pressure. Arrive moved with raking strides in the final furlong to claim the race easily from Kazuri who fought back to take the runner-up berth ahead of Abderus.

Michael Eshwer trained Gutsy Wind who was toiling in the rear, warmed up to the task late in the race and came home with a powerful burst of speed to get the better of Starstruck to win the 1400 metres Panaji Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, in the final moments of the races. Starstruck had got the better of Eloika in the final furlong and shaped to win but his hopes were put paid by the finishing burst of Gutsy Wind who perhaps with more ground to cover, can win again. The lower division of the race was won by S M Johnson trained Benedetta who was backed to the exclusion of the rest. Benedetta measured the front-running Ter Adah in the final furlong and marched towards the winning post. Here`s Abbey ran on from behind to occupy the second spot.

Last start winner Silsila just about managed to save the day for her supporters as she clung on to the lead grimly to win the 1200 metres Skyline Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Silsila got the better of front-running Dare The Don in the final furlong but closer home, was strongly pressed by Classic King who finished with a rattle along with Veni Vidi Vici but the fancied runner prevailed by a short neck. Generous Gesture was not far behind in the fourth position.

Feroz Khan trained Country`s Courage proved too good for the opposition in the 1100 metres Nelamangala Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Country ‘s Courage shot ahead inside the final furlong. Jockey Saddam Hussain was not required to exert himself to have the fancied runner bounce clear for a comprehensive win over Lovely Micmel and Young Gallant. Dinesh Pujar trained Roi Junior won the lower division of the race getting the better of Country`s Tigress. Neron charged home late but had to be satisfied with the third position.

Favourite Brave Admiral fought back valiantly all the way in the final furlong to win the 1200 metres Mauritius Pearl Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Brave Admiral conceded the lead to Amazing Safari in the homestretch but battled on resolutely to wrest back the initiative even as Amazing Safari began to falter. Brave Admiral had another threat in the form of Sadeek who came home with a big rush but found the front-runner reach the safety of the post.

Favourite Archimedes prevailed in the 1600 metres Ansbach Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 in the shadow of the post. Cato`s Call and Golden Steps were battling it out all the way in the straight before Archimedes steadily bridged the gap and surged ahead closer home to justify the favouritism.
