Silver Ikon canters home in KROA Million

  January 13 , 2017

Prithviraj trained Silver Ikon cantered home in the 1200 metres Karnataka Racehorse Owners` Association Million, a term race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. Silver Ikon won in tremendous fashion, leaving the others stranded right from the start. Favourite Apache Sunrise played up at the gates, sat down and was subsequently withdrawn from the fray.

Apache Sunrise had recorded a smashing win in his debut run despite looking far from ready. The progeny of Excellent Art was quoted at cramped odds. While Apache Sunrise deserved to be the favourite, the cramped odds certainly were not justified because he was taking on horses which were improving ones besides some freshers whose potential was not yet known. This is one of the ills of the book-oriented betting one can say because the odds don`t evolve from the natural process of betting but on the notions of odds-making bookmakers where the merits of good horses are disguised in the flood of money that is bound to flow on the favourites. In hindsight, one is not sure whether Apache Sunrise could have pulled through because Silver Ikon showed that he was capable of a top-drawer performance which could have put paid to the hopes of the ante-post favourite.

Apache Sunrise had to be withdrawn after the horse suffered trauma at the gates. Prashant Dhebe who is back in the saddle after a longish absence from the saddle due to health issues, took Silver Ikon on a start to finish mission. The progeny of Green Coast broke clear from his pursuers at the top of the straight to eventually win by a widening margin of 10 lengths in a smart time of one minute 13.23 seconds. Land of Liberty and Habanero occupied the next two slots behind the winner.

Jockey S John who was back in the saddle after an injury kept him out of action for a month, straightaway had a winner through long shot Mystic Music who held off Afore to win the 1800 metres Shivanasamudra Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The market fancy was last start winner Legacy Dream. Mystic Music who finished a poor tenth in his last outing, raced prominently along with Afore and got the better of the latter close home. Legacy Dream who was well placed to make an assault on the front-runner duo, failed to find an extra gear and had to settle for the third place ahead of fancied Sagrada who was under pressure to keep pace.

Prasanna Kumar trained Rare Rhythm recorded an encore with a comfortable win in the 1600 metres Haveri Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Rare Rhythm went for a narrow gap along the rails but luckily for the fancied runner, Amazing Skill moved out slightly giving a dream run along the rails. Rare Rhythm quickened well and bounced clear inside the final 100 metres and won the race from a cluster of horses behind. Amazing Skill who led from start grimly held on to take the second position ahead of Raw Gold and Tinderella, with a neck each separating these finishers.

Private Paradise was another winner saddled by Prasanna Kumar. Backed spiritedly to win the 1200 metres Mercara Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50, Private Paradise got a smooth run along the rails in the homestretch and quickened for home by establishing a winning lead in the final furlong. Favourite Massive Dynamics who had twice won over seven furlongs, took time to warm up over this sprint and could no better than finish second best. Soviet Union returned rich dividends on place investment.

Padmanabhan trained Day Flower who has been subjected to two operations for his throat, was the favourite in the 1200 metres Vibrant Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated15 to 35. The four-year-old filly proved superior to the opposition as she was not pressed by any of the runners as she checked in by a margin of four lengths over Jayadratha who nosed out Heaven And Earth to get the runner-up berth. Warren Singh trained Ahearttoremember brought off a big upset in the lower division of the race in the hands of apprentice Chetan Gowda. Ahearttoremember chased Island Pearl into the straight and despite veering off a straight course, proved good enough to win the race from the long-time front-runner. Fine Barrister was third.

Apprentice jockey Nazerul Alam induced a powerful effort from Firing Line who crossed the winning line ahead of Opening Act in the 1400 metres Flashing Star Plate, a race for horses rated125 to 35. Opening Act stole a march with a furlong left in the race and shaped to win but Firing Line showed lot of vigour to nail the front-runner in the final strides of the race. Moher was third.

T S Jodha drove out Md Khan trained Granada to a narrow win over Extremelydangerous in the Ullal Beach Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Granada led from the start and closer home, a cluster of horses pounced on him but he held on gutsily, with Extremelydangerous narrowly failing to get the better of the front-runner. Karod Pati too finished with a flourish to get the better of Noble Princess to save place money.
