Your Royal Majesty justifies odds

By: Goldie Boy   December 24 , 2016

Trainer Pesi Shroff`s top-weighted runner, Your Royal Majesty (Y.S. Srinath-up) fully justified his 11/10 odds while winning the 1,400m Army Cup, Saturday`s feature event. The afternoon also witnessed trainer Harvinder Bath`s long-shot Anastasio (Shezad Khan) winning the 1,200m Hyderabad Race Club Cup unchallenged from a quietly fancied runner Valentino (apprentice Hindu Singh). The baby race, the 1,400m P.C. Lall of Nazargunj, too, threw up a long priced winner in Bharath Singh`s Rufus (Arshad Alam) to make the seven-event card look packed with long knives again, but entertaining, too.

Your Royal Majesty beat a quality opposition, comprising of Commander, Shivalik Storm and Shivalik Heroine among others. The horse was held back in fourth or fifth as Shivalik Heroine made most of the running. What was more important that the favourite responded instantly and with alacrity when asked for an effort, inside the final furlong. At the wire trainer Malesh Narredu`s Commander (A. Sandesh) was best of the rest, also justifying his last run when the aged horse had placed close behind the winner, a five-year-old.

Jockey Shezad Khan made his task simpler on the speedy Anastasia in the HRC Cup. Establishing a two-length lead from the start of the race the game speedster went about his task without being bothered as to what was happening behind. It was the recent Mumbai migrant, Valentino, who successfully managed to peg back Knighthood`s (Arshad Alam) challenge for minor placings while the fancied pair of Make Way For Me (Sandesh) and Suzanna (Dashrath) failed miserably after raising hopes early in the race.

Bharath had four youngsters lined up in the 10-horse field for the Nazargunj Memorial Cup and three of them – Rufus, Shohin and Simon Templar – were in the forefront after the race took a serious turn as they placed in the order named. For the records, Rufus, the winner, was the least fancied runner from the stable. Anyway, the 6/1 fancy Shohin (Dashrath) made most of the running as trainer Javed Khan`s 9/4 favourite Adi`s Delight (Sandesh) was in chase while Rufus and Simon Templar followed during the early half of the running.

Rufus made his winning move after the favourite cried off from the fray, inside the final furlong. The Lord Admiral colt had no problem overtaking the stable-mate, Shohin, as he went about his task of winning.

Trainer Vijay Singh`s heavily fancied runner, Ophion (Neeraj Rawal) brought about the biggest disappointment in the 1,400m L. Fownes Memorial Cup. The 5/4 favourite, who was impressive in his recent defeat, lost all his chance at the gates, losing about five lengths. The youngsters was quickly brought into the fray but it was a foregone conclusion that the Abbyside colt would tire. The race was easily won by Ophion`s last outing conqueror, Celtic King (Ashhad Asbar) – trained by Vikash Jaiswal -- from his stable-mate Few Dollars More (Arshad Alam).

Trainer Manvendra Singh`s Theo (Srinath), was the hottest favourite in the afternoon`s card and the Top Class colt won the 1,400m Gen. A.S. Vaidya Memorial Cup, just about. The half-money favourite galloped in the mid-division of the field but Srinath had to use all tricks up sleeves to get the favourite catch up with Vijay`s Half Volley (Neeraj), virtually at the post.

Neeraj, however, rode a well-judged race on Robert Gowli`s fancied runner, Annie Oakley in the 1,100m Oakmead Handicap, the concluding event. Galloping in the mid-division till a furlong from home the jockey in-luck just about managed to down the long time leader, Monsieur Strauss (Sandeep Rajput), from Vikash`s stable.

The day started with trainer Shafiq Khan`s 5/2 favourite Lhotse (Hindu) delivering the goods in the 1,600m Royal Blue Star Handicap. It was a run-of-the-mill victory for the Tejano mare, who galloped in the mid-division till about a furlong from home, before making her winning run to beat another late finisher, Coley (Dashrath) and the early leader, Sergeant Major.
