Baashagar strikes winning form in feature event

By: Tippu Sultan   January 10 , 2017

Anupam Sharma trained Baashagar won the 1600 metres Sri A S Krishna Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 86 and above, the feature event of Tuesday`s Hyderabad races against the run of expectations. The long shot Baashagar produced a winning effort in the final furlong to leave the principal contenders stranded.

The race had an open look about it though the horses which were expected to figure at the finish could be grouped with Vijay Viraaj heading the list along with Happy Guy and Net Champ. Supreme Fairy who has lost her form led for a while before Commanding Boy took charge and brought the field deep into the straight. At this point, Baashagar moved with determined strides and stole a march. The lead built was decisive enough to fetch the long shot a comfortable win. Vijay Viraaj held off Happy Guy to take the second spot. Commanding Boy who raced aggressively in front, weakened to finish fourth while Net Champ failed to quicken when the race came and on the boil and faded out.

Trevor Patel drove out favourite Rubyonrails to a facile win in the 1100 metres Baile Lalith Pershad Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 46 to 70. The favourite shot ahead with 200 metres left in the race and was not challenged by any of the runners en route to a win by over three lengths. Catherine was second ahead of Mighty Swing who is still to find the form of old. Picture Perfect disappointed with a dismal performance. Aakash Vani from trainer Anupam Sharma`s stable won the lower division of the race taking firm control of the race from the start and skipping clear in the final furlong to record an easy win over late-rallying Legend. Time Is Luck who was bidding for a hat-trick was completely outsprinted and was beaten to the third place.

Laxman Singh trained Palace On Wheels looked ready to win straightaway as the progeny of Rebuttal took charge from the wide outside draw to claim the 1100 metres Anmol Ratan Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds without being tested. Palace On Wheels hit the front, enjoyed uncontested lead and was so far ahead in the straight for anyone to put a semblance of a fight. Fancied Jumeira Express could only hope to catch the shadow of the front-runner. City of Sails found the rhythm late in the day which was good enough to fetch him the second place. Srinivas Reddy trained Warrior Supreme who was backed to the exclusion of the rest to win the lower division of the race, gave anxious moments to her supporters before snatching a last stride win over Asteria. It was difficult to identify the winner when the battling duo went past the post locked together. Asteria led every inch of the way except the last one to lose the race in a tantalisingly close finish. Moondancer had a fair chance but jockey Pradeep Chouhan botched up his chances by electing to make the run along the inside and was completely blocked off a clear run. He dragged the filly on the wide outside and despite being thrown out of her stride, the progeny of Excellent Art finished so strongly which suggested that a more competent ride could have seen a result accruing in a different way.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Highly Acclaimed made a winning debut, claiming the 1400 metres Hyderabad Juvenile Million, a terms race for three-year-olds. Far Sight was widely expected to benefit by the race run but the favourite disappointed to finish poorly. Bayrd attempted to win with a start to finish mission with Highly Acclaimed settled in the third position. Bayrd was caught up with and overhauled by the eventual winner, Highly Acclaimed who smoothly cruised ahead and opened a good cushion going into the final furlong. China Millennium finished strongly but the front-runner had enough leeway to go past the winning post ahead of the strong challenger. Tootsie Roll too was not far behind in the third position, a half-length each separating the first three placed horses.

The withdrawal of Top Contender on veterinary grounds made things easy for Mahathi in the 1600 metres Adler Plate, a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Mahathi was always in command of the situation drawing clear with 200 metres left in the race and keeping Miracle King at a safe distance. The latter managed to neck out Coruba for the second place.

The consistent Man of the Series from Shezad Abbas yards, easily accounted for the opposition in the 1600 metres Members Cup, a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Man of the Series easily overwhelmed the opposition with a speedy display in the straight to win the race with a measure of comfort. There was a cluster finish behind for minor placings. Dhool Ka Phool headed Hard Fought for the second place with Forever Bullish and Lavender finishing in close order.

In a battle, among long shots, Our Ensign held off the late rally of Take A Bow and Cruiser to win the 1200 metres Hovercraft Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Favourite Golden Joy was subjected to a veterinary check at the gates and in keeping with horses whose well-being is not clear cut, Golden Joy was never in the hunt and struggled to stay in touch with the field.
