Serendine upstages Triumphus in the Queen’s Cup

By: Goldie Boy   February 11 , 2017

As expected, trainer Bharath Singh`s filly Serendine (Dashrath Singh-up) had the measure of her stable-mate, Triumphus (A. Sandesh), albeit narrowly, in the 2,800m Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Saturday`s showpiece event. The afternoon also witnessed the Bharath notching up a priced treble.

Serendine`s victory, in fact, hardly came as a surprise in view of youngsters` dominance in the event, since the terms of the race opened gates, in the year 1974-75 season, for the might galloper, Midnight Cowboy (Sinclair Marshall), to participate in the prized event. For the records, the late Capt. H.D. Fownes saddled the horse, who also won the Calcutta Derby (Richard Alford), followed it up with the victory in the Turf Invitation Cup (R. Alford), hosted by RCTC. Incidentally, Midnight Cowboy went on to score a back-to-back win in the Queen`s Cup.

By the same logic, Sans Prix (Neeraj Rawal), also a four-year-old participant in the 10-horse field, deserved an equal chance of winning but the China Visit daughter failed to take the gruelling journey in her stride.

The pace in the race was solid, thanks to The Unicorn who showed the way to Shivalik Heroine (Ashhad Asbar), Sans Prix and Serendine while the rest followed in a close order.

Stevalena (C. Alford) was the first one to be shown the daylight as the three leaders ran short of gas but her brush with the lead was short lived as Serendine and Triumphus began their move, below the distance-post.

However, Serendine always had the edge over Triumphus in the final 250m of the race, thanks to Dashrath`s regular acquaintance with the filly. The verdict between the two was a mere head and it would have gone the other way, had riders been switched. There is no intention of demeaning Sandesh`s talent but the Dashrath, having ridden both horses, regularly, was better equipped.

The afternoon was otherwise disappointing in terms of competition. Six of the 10 winners went on to score, adopting pillar-to-post tactics.

Form held to the word in the 1,600m Calcutta Million with Bharath`s Castlebridge (Trevor) going to the start as an even-money favourite and delivering the goods, too, with an emphatic victory over his stable-mate, Sana (Dashrath).

Arti Doctor`s 18/10 favourite, Glorious Leaps (C. Alford), too, made the every post of the 1,200m Malaysia Cup a winning one. Much was expected from Raunak Banerji`s filly, Stellanova (Jorawar Singh), who, in her previous clash, had placed a neck ahead of Glorious Leaps but she went down without a semblance of fight.

It was Bharath`s Lochinivar (Dashrath) who set the start-to-finish tune in the curtain raiser, the 2,000m French Cup. The Admiralofthefleet colt justified his form, in the Derby; in which he had made most of the running. It was trainer James Mckeown`s I Told You Know (Askash Rajput), also a Derby runner, who made Dashrath stretch the winner, a10/1 shot, in the final furlong.

The story was no different in the two divisions of the 1,200m Philippines Cup, claimed by Harvinder Bath`s Abigail (Shezad Khan) and Vijay Singh`s Celerino (S. John) who made the short work of the opposition in their respective events.

Trainer Richard Alford`s 5/2 favourite, Citi Heights (apprentice Ranidan Singh). too, was no exception while sailing away with the lower division of the 1,400m Portugal Cup, adoprting the day`s winning formula. However, the upper division of the race witnessed a different pattern. The race was won by trainer Jasbir Singh`s long shot, Cool Conqueror (Mohit Singh) who was brought into the fray with a late run to down Robert Gowli`s Supreme Ruler (Munna Alam) and Raunak`s Habiki (Ashhad Asbar).

The two divisions of the 1,200m Selvel Cup were also keenly contested. In the upper division, Javed Khan`s Rustler (B. Mahesh), though out-paced in early half, was brought with a menacing run to beat Jasbir`s Kaartiken (apprentice Ranidan) after Shyam Habbu`s 8/10 favourite Carralisa (Sandesh) had come to a screeching halt, having lead till the distance post.

Habbu`s friendless runner, Fire Falcon (Vinay Jaiswal), on the other hand, got stronger in the final phase of the running of the lower division of the race, to beat a solidly fancied horse Words (Ranidan), from trainer Sarfraz Khan`s stable.
