Al Sadr prevails by a whisker in Dhariwal Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   February 26 , 2017

Anupam Sharma trained Al Sadr managed to get the better of Doroteo by a whisker to win the 2400 metres J S Dhariwal Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 46 to 70, one of the highlights of races that were gone through at Malakpet on Sunday. Doroteo shaped to record an encore as the progeny of China Visit had a good lead going into the final furlong but the finishing burst of Al Sadr saw the latter put his head in front at the all-important end.

Like Wise who was racing in a handicap event after a futile attempt in the classics, was backed to bounce back to winning form as the filly was taking on modest lot of horses in a lower category race. However, Like Wise who was prominent till the final bend, failed to accelerate and disappeared from contention as quickly as she showed up. Surely, she has lost the sharpness that characterized her performances in the monsoon season. Doroteo who was handily placed at the top of the straight, went into the lead and seemed to be travelling well when Al Sadr who has been consistent this season, joined the issue. Doroteo struggled hard to shake off his pursuer Al Sadr but the latter was determined and in the hands of jockey K Mukesh, got the nod in the closing stride of the race. Ashwa Ashoka was third. The race was named after J S Dhariwal who had been a champion trainer for any numbers of years in Hyderabad.

Srinivas Reddy trained Prospero has lost her way and she was also withdrawn from the fray on the last occasion. Prospero was nevertheless in receipt of one-sided support in the betting ring as punters believed that the filly had given enough indication in her preparatory workouts of finding her old form. Because of these reasons, she went to the post for the 1400 metres Raja Narasimha Rao Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 46 to 70 as a short priced favourite. In the event, Prospero was hesitant at the start and was inclined to run out. After being gathered and brought into second position, the filly lost a stride at the final bend and very nearly clipped Magna Carta who was about to take over the running. Prospero thus lost all the chances. Magna Carta went on to record an upset win as he won the race from Kalinda quite easily. Scooby Dooby Do came from a long way back but just about failed to get the better of Kalinda for the runner-up berth. Last start winner Secret Art was a big disappointment.

Satheesh trained Magical Skill produced a powerful run down the final furlong to clinch the 1100 metres Mahmudabad Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 50. The finishing burst of Magical Skill changed the complexion of the game as the horses which were fighting for the spoils were relegated to clamour for minor placings. Born To Do It held off Ikigai and King David to get the second place. Prime Time flopped miserably in the lower division of the race as the favourite inexplicably began to run out at the final bend and lost the possible chance of winning. Pixie Girl who led from the start was strongly challenged by Supurinto who came up with a late rally but fell short by a whisker in the end. Wild Heart was third ahead of Prime Time.

Srinivas Reddy trained Champion Bull made an emphatic winning debut in the 1100 metres Navigator Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Champion Bull displaced Plane Jane in front on turning for home and sped away for an effortless win over Sweet Piston and Seven Eleven. Leo D`Silva trained Asteria was also an impressive winner of the lower division of the race, having sewn up the race long way from home. Platinum Classz and Brookwood occupied the next places more than five lengths adrift of the winner. Jockey N S Rathore on favourite Desert Moon had a fall approaching the final bend. The horses missed a stride possibly due to stumbling.

Donald Netto trained Preciosa had no problem in scoring in the 1200 metres Sling Shot Plate, a race for horses rated 66 to 90. After Numinous set a fast pace and weakened on entering the straight, Preciosa took command of the race and was not unduly pressed to score from late finishing Without Make Up. Ashwa Raftar was third.

Prince Caspian from the stables of trainer Satheesh recorded his second win of the season by easily accounting for the opposition in the 1400 metres Sea Master Plate, a race for three-year-olds. After racing a handy second behind Lost And Found well into the straight, Prince Caspian broke clear to win from favourite Lady In Lace who had a big leeway to recover. Treasure Striker held off Creator to save place money.

The well backed Shandaar fought a resolute battle with Dawning Hope before pulling away in the shadow of the post to win the 1200 metres Asifabad Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Dawning Hope retained the initiative for a long while in the straight before weakening to pave the way for Shandaar to triumph.
