Adam records back to back success in Sprinters Cup

  March 4 , 2017

Pesi Shroff trained Adam had things falling in place as the progeny of Multidimensional recorded his second straight success in the Gr 1 Mysore Race Club Sprinters` Cup, the highlight of two-day Invitational Cup races held at the Bangalore Race Course on Saturday. Bangalore based Captain Morgan recorded a dramatic win over Tintinnabulation in the gruelling 3000 metres Gr 1 Stayers Cup.

The Sprinters Cup has always defied expectations. It is not always the horse with the best race record and current performance that wins the race. The horse which gets it right, both in terms of performance and luck of the race, draw number et al will emerge triumphant. Adam had the favour draw though he was coming on the back of an unexpected defeat in the hands of locally based Happy Guy at Hyderabad but surpassed all expectations with this decisive win. Pesi Shroff has been very successful in this event as his other ward Attila had also performed the same feat. Dancing Prances who has the record of winning the Dr S C Jain Sprinters Cup at Mumbai for three-years in a row, was done in by the draw as also the fact that the Bangalore race track, with its undulation, sharp bends and a gradient which raises up to 40 feet from the 800 metres marker upsetting his chances. Dancing Prances flopped badly. Smile Stone produced a late acceleration but fell short. Kolkata challenger Multitude did not have the luck of the race as he suffered interference soon after the jump out and did not get a clear run despite which he finished less than two lengths behind the winner. Old war horse Shivalik Star highlighted the value of keeping a well performed horse in racing by finishing a game third, thwarting the late rally of Multitude.

Dancing Phoenix set a fast pace with Adam settled in second position. Eight-year-old Shivalik Star was in close proximity while the rest were all were struggling to jockey a good position in the unwieldy field of 17 runners. The ones with the outside draw were doomed from the beginning and it was no surprise that horses like Dancing Prances, Mickey Mouse and others were chasing a hopeless cause. Dancing Prances did not raise a fluent gallop and stuck to the tail. Dashrath Singh`s relative inexperience on the Bangalore track came to the fore as he failed to get Multitude a favourable position as the Kolkata challenger ran into rough weather and was tailed off last. Adam got the better of Dancing Phoenix well into the straight and broke into a useful lead while the others were manoeuvring their way from behind. The only possible threat to Adam was Smile Stone who moved with big strides from behind but found the winning post coming too soon. Smile Stone got the second position ahead of Shivalik Star and late finishing Multitude. The horses which had occupied the first three position right from the start were the ones which carried on the battle till the finish. Adam clocked a smart time of one minute 11.40 seconds which was fractionally slower than the course record held by Speed Six at one minute 11.27 seconds. Jockey Nikhil Parmar who recorded his first success in a Grade 1 race could not have hoped for a better performance on the big stage of Indian racing.

The Gr 1 Stayers Cup had a modest field with the best performed ones showing the ill-effects of a long campaign. Four-year-olds have rarely won this race as most of them are targeted to win the Invitation Cup. It appeared a wise move on the part of Sulaiman Attaollahi to target Captain Morgan in the Stayers Cup as none of the horses in the fray had creditable achievement in recent times to their credit. In the event, old war horse Tintinnabulation who circled round the field at the final bend, bounced clear in the straight and established a sizeable lead and looked to have sewn up the race. Captain Morgan at this point of time was trying to work his way from way behind along the inner path. Tintinnabulation began to show distress sign approaching the final 100 metres and began to falter. Captain Morgan got all the openings to come into strong contention and managed to overhaul the front-runner close home to a win as a favourite. Trevor Patel who also got his first Stayers Cup winner, could not hide his joy at delivering the goods as he exulted exuberantly while crossing the winning post. Tintinnabulation who was bidding to win the Stayers Cup back to back, put up a game performance only to lose when in sight of an incredible win. Towering Heights nosed out Triumphs to get the third place.

Padmanabhan trained Mauritania swamped the opposition in the 1400 metres Kunigal Stud Million, a terms race for maiden three-year-olds. There was inspired support for Automatic and Prevalent Force with the odds on Mauritania expanding dramatically. David Allan had no hesitation in taking Mauritania to the front from the start and the progeny of Excellent Art outsprinted the rest and checked in by a widening margin of six lengths over Shaman and Don Dela Vega to herald his arrival as a horse of immense potential. Prevalent Force who was blazing the track, ran green and was not spotted to have any chance during the race.

Irfan Ghatala trained Gypsy drew clear in the final furlong and managed to thwart the late rally of Arvak in the 1200 metres Sans Craintes Stud Million, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Arvak hadn`t progressed as much as his merit demanded because of a setback which had kept him out of action for a long time. Arvak had a dress rehearsal in stiff company and he was widely expected to have a bold show in this set. However, Arvak had too much leeway to cover in the homestretch and despite his powerful effort, fell short. Amber Crown who was coming back in distance, showed his liking for the shorter trip by finishing a noteworthy third.

After two forward runs where the four-year-old filly had finished third, Sterling Role produced a winning effort with aggressive running in front and kept her rivals at bay in the 1400 metres Original Vel Million, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. The fancied runners in the fray failed to run up to expectations. Ira was a surprise second ahead of Emancipation. The fact these horses finished on the frame resulted in the exacta pool being carried over.

Imtiaz Khan trained Expert was well backed to have a bold show in the 1200 metres Garuda Mall Million, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The progeny of Win Legend did not disappoint as he broke into a good lead in the final furlong and staved off a surprise challenge from Rare And Bold to land the spoils. Mariko saved place money by edging out Indian Brahmos.

Neil Darashah trained Ninon proved too good for the opposition in the 1600 metres Japan Million Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest category. John had Ninon leading from the start and the got-abroad filly skipped away in the straight to record an easy win over Thalassa. Extremelydangerous was third.

Hurrah raced in handy third position as Amazing Desire did the pace-setting in the 1200 metres Ravi Aggarwal Memorial Million, a race for horses rated 15 to 35 before assuming command midway in the homestretch to record a facile win. The Gregory Sandhu trainee was well backed to have a strong say and Hurrah did not disappoint such an expectation. Mumbai challenger D`Accord was the favourite but the five-year-old mare disappointed finishing a tame third behind Just Fabulous.
