Kramer prevails in Homi Wadia Trophy

By: Frankel   March 9 , 2017

Malesh Narredu trained Kramer managed to prevail in the 1000 metres Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Trophy, a terms race for maiden three-year-olds, the feature event of Thursday`s evening races held at Mumbai. Kramer won despite being wayward and drifting out under pressure but what made the difference to the outcome of the race was the better riding prowess of Trevor Patel as against C S Jodha who rode Lady Sergeant who fell short narrowly by also drifting out much more than the winner.

Kramer was more fancied than the rest because of his impressive second under a modest jockey despite veering out of a straight course. Trevor replaced Mohsin in the saddle this time out and the strong support under such circumstances was only to be expected. Lady Sergeant who had two good forward runs to her credit was also backed to win. Trevor had Kramer lead from the start and although he drifted to the edge of the track, he was able to control the horse from totally being chaotic and this ensured that he kept the race because his only challenger Lady Sergeant also drifted on her own accord as Jodha was unable to keep her in. Had Lady Sergeant kept a straight course, the waywardness of the eventual winner would have made a material difference. First-timer Ice Dancer ran on from way of the pace to take the third position to advertise her readiness to be in the thick of things next time out.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Multiglory recorded an encore by producing a powerful burst in the final furlong to clinch the 1600 metres Picasso Plate, a race for horses rated 53 to 79. Jockey Dashrath Singh had Multiglory come way off the pace and the progeny of Multidimensional had enough zest to win with a measure of comfort. Favourite Eternal Sunshine held off late-finishing Mekong Delta to get the runner-up berth.

Though Vishal Gaikwad trained Nelsons Blood had disappointed expectations on the last two occasions, this time out the progeny of Whatsthescript found the opposition much to his liking as he left the field stranded to win the 1600 metres D P C Kapadia Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, in great style. Pretty Angle struggled hard to pick up speed but failed. Nevertheless, the filly succeeded in edging out Viking to get the second place.

The 1200 metres Dr A H Sayed Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, looked like a minefield with several horses running with a fair chance of landing the spoils. It was difficult to shortlist the possible winner. In the event, long shot Seacrets just about managed to win the race from late-finishing Way Ahead and favourite Tough Enough. The first five finishers were almost in a line.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Ladislaus had a bold show in the 1200 metres Six Speed Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. There was no clear defined favourite for the race as several horses were in the betting indicating the confusion about the possible winner. Ladislaus sealed the fate of the race by grabbing the lead with a furlong left in the race and bounced clear to win with something to spare. Flashy Wings ran on to finish second ahead of Arakawah and Sparkling Eyes.

The sustained betting on Forever Yours indicated that this Subhag Singh trainee would be in serious contention for the 1000 metres Flareon Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 1 to 26. Highland Princess was another to receive significant support in the ring despite the wide outside draw. In the event, Forever Yours led from the start with a brisk jump out from the gates and always held the edge over Highland Princess who put up a valiant fight. King of Killen was third. The lower division of the race also saw Smart Choice emerge as the market selection to win the race. The sustained betting on Smart Choice did not go in vain as apprentice jockey S A Amit induced a strong effort from the favourite in the final furlong to get the horse finish ahead of Knight At Arms and Amazon Cat.

Imtiaz Sait trained Gloriosus took over the running within the first two furlongs of 1600 metres Beautiful Stranger Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds and sped away for a comfortable win over My Precious who chased the front-runner in vain. Favourite We Break The Rules failed to accelerate enough to make a difference to the outcome of the and struggled in third position all through.
