Sandesh guides Jack Frost to victory in feature

By: Frankel   March 12 , 2017

Sandesh who stole the limelight on Sunday with four winners, guided lesser fancied Jack Frost to a facile win over Commodore in the 2400 metres Gr 2 C N Wadia Gold Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of the day. The race did not attract top horses coming as it does within a week of the running of the Indian Turf Invitation Cup, horses which were on the decline were in the fray and in the fitness of things, Jack Frost who has relatively logged less miles than the prime contenders should find his rewarding day.

The best-performed horse in the fray was Alaindair who incidentally was the highest rated horse. However, his last three runs had shown that he had been on the decline. He was also being subjected to a cruelty of sorts as he was made to run within a week of running at Bangalore in the Invitation Cup at Bangalore where he had performed miserably. Commodore who had been raced sparingly and enjoying fresh legs though lacking in competitive experience of running against top company had the first run on his opponents in the homestretch and enjoyed the lead going into the final furlong. However, Jack Frost put paid to his hopes with a powerful dash in the final stages of the race to comprehensively beat the front-runner to enter the winner`s circle after 546 days. Cameron who attempted start to finish tactics weakened to finish third, nosing out Alaindair for that position.

Brahmachari bounced back to winning form after 413 days by recording a surprise win in the 1200 metres Mulraj Goculdas Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Brahmachari`s last win was when he had dead-heated with Goldberg and after that win, he had been struggling to find form. Since his last run also had not suggested a possible change in fortunes, Brahmachari was allowed to run at long odds. Paramour, for the fourth time running, was made the strong favourite and this time out as at cramped odds. After Supreme Regime set the pace and weakened, Paramour and Brynhill began to dispute and even as these horses were busy in their struggle, Brahmachari moved from way behind with powerful strides and went sailing clear to record an easy win. Paramour was second for the fourth time in a row while Brynhill who is a pale shadow of his former self, failed to find an extra gear when needed most and weakened to finish third.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Cerrado who had a good forward run in her last outing, swamped the opposition in the 1400 metres Design One Stakes, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Cerrado assumed command soon after turning for home and sped away to win by a widening margin of seven lengths over Solo Mission who barely held off Anniversary Girl to get the runner-up berth.

The Indian Navy Trophy (Div I), threw a confusing picture with odds fluctuating frequently on fancied runners Motherland, Good Thing and El Tycoon. In the event, the presence of Sandesh made all the difference to the fortunes of the Dallas Todywalla trainee as Motherland just about held off a strong challenge from Fabio and El Tycoon to land the spoils. The lower division of the race saw another Todywalla horse Philadelphia being made a strong favourite. The favourite, however, let down badly with a disappointing effort. It was left to long-shot Democrat to trounce the opposition with an aggressive effort in the front. Petronius was second ahead of Warlock while the favourite was a poor fourth, unable to find anything extra under pressure.

Subhag Singh trained Sussex Pride attracted smart money in the 2000 metres Jayaramdas Patel Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 and the fancied runner did not disappoint in the hands of Trevor Patel. Sussex Pride took control of the proceedings with a furlong left in the race and bounced clear to record an easy win over Flashing Honour who edged out Thor of Asgard to get the runner-up berth.

The 1600 metres Behram A Engineer Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, produced a close finish, with Sandesh making a difference to the chances of eventual winner Vice Admiral. Pugnacious who attracted lot of betting, could have been the winner but apprentice jockey A Gaikwad failed to get a clear run for the favourite who despite all the hiccups, finished powerfully only to miss the berth by a neck. With a better-quality riding than the one offered by Gaikwad, the result would have tilted in favour of the runner-up. Despite running wide, Volantis finished third. Glorious Eyes who was widely expected to have a bold show, gave a poor account of herself thanks to an inept ride by jockey C S Jodha.

Imtiaz Sait trained Ritz just about managed to make it in the 2400 metres W Buckley Plate, a race for lowest rated horses. Ritz took over the running with more than a furlong left in the race and shaped to win comfortably. However, the race took a dramatic turn when Red Fort who was at the tail end, began to make progress along the rails and came menacingly close to toppling the favourite but fell short by a neck in the end.
