Pure Zinc pulls off a big upset in Shapoorji Million

By: Frankel   March 19 , 2017

Adhiraj Jodha trained Pure Zinc brought off a big upset in the 1600 metres Gr 3 Shapoorji Pallonji Breeders` Championship, a terms race for colts and geldings, the feature event of Sunday`s races held at Mumbai. In the other highlight of the day, Themis grimly held off a strong challenge from Manifold to win the Gr 3 Forbes Breeders` Juveniles Fillies` Championship.

Pure Zinc`s win was not on expected lines though the progeny of Sedgefield may have had his share of supporters based on the colt`s only run where he had finished second best. The horse with strong credentials Timeless was the favourite as the three-year-old gelding had run behind Tutankhamun in one of his efforts while in the other outing, third behind the outstanding filly Ruffina. As such, Timeless was widely expected to be a force to reckon with based on the experience of having run against top contemporaries. However, Timeless ran like a dud, struggling when the race picked up momentum in the straight and eventually finished a dismal last. There was no official statement forthcoming if the favourite suffered any hiccup during the race. The race was won by 10 to 1 shot Pure Zinc who got the better of Caprisca inside the final furlong and then thwarted the renewed bid of the lesser fancied runner by digging deep into the reserves and producing something extra under pressure. Rochester was third. The other big disappointment of the race was the poor performance of Mygrator who was expected to make a quantum improvement over his second placed effort of his debut run. J Chinoy who has been enjoying a good run in the last one year after a quiet career was astride the winner.

Jockey Trevor Patel drove out Themis to barely beat the strong challenge of Manifold in the Forbes Breeders` Juvenile Fillies Championship. Summer Rays who was one of the strong fancies to win the race raced keen, took a long while to settle and when the race came on the boil, there was nothing left in her. She finished poorly. Trevor brought Themis along the narrow gap that materialized along the rails and surged ahead. There was a strong challenge from the progeny of Multidimensional but the greater resolution of the jockey and the horse put paid to the hopes of Manifold.

S Waheed trained Celtic Prince maintained the amazing sequence of wins when beating a quality opposition in the 1400 metres R M & Rukmani Goculdas Million, a race for four-year-olds and over. Celtic Prince who has won three races during the season besides placing on board on the two other occasions, led from the start and spurted clear to win from Dancing Prances and Our Royal Majesty. The last two named horses who had been rousing performers in their prime, appear to be on steep decline and performed way below their known capability.

Jockey Sandesh failed to win any race during the course of the day`s action. Sandesh`s graph this season has been peculiar with either him winning many races in a day`s action or firing a blank. With Trombone veering out soon after jump out, the fancied runner was out of contention straightaway for the 1600 metres Racing World Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Irises led from the start with Celestial Light chasing in earnest. Trevor was able to push Celestial Light to take charge with a furlong left in the race and drove out the four-year-old filly to a comfortable win over Irises. Furious N Fast was third.

Trevor was at the receiving end in the 1000 metres J Rustomji Soparivala Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Trevor bolted to the front on favourite Baryshnikov from the outside draw and had a healthy lead going into the final furlong. Baryshnikov looked like managing to stay in front well past the post but apprentice jockey Santosh who was astride the well-backed Alfredo managed to spur the horse to produce a good, finishing burst which helped the lesser fancied runner to nail the front-runner on the post. Locarno ran on to finish third.

A similar start to finish tactic on the part of Trevor on Allegria also came to grief in the 1400 metres Pronto Pronto Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Allegra led deep into the straight but Kiss From A Rose who was in earnest chase, measured the front runner close home and had enough cushion to reach the safety of the winning post ½ a length ahead of late-rallying Firenze who showed good improvement over previous disastrous effort as a favourite.

A Jodha trained Vulcan had no problem in beating the challenge of favourite Geranium in the three-horse field that took part in the 2400 metres P R Mehta Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. After June set the pace and brought the field into the homestretch, Geranium went ahead but failed to keep the lead when Vulcan came up with a strong run. Vulcan skipped clear without fuss and provided an armchair ride to victory for Trevor.
