Commodore staves off B Fifty-Two to win feature

By: Frankel   March 26 , 2017

Pesi Shroff trained Commodore held on resolutely to land the spoils in the GR 3 Tata Housing Turf Championship, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. The progeny of Danehill Dancer led all the way and had enough fuel to keep the strong challenge of B Fifty Two at bay. It was a flop show from the fancied Colombiana.

The scales were in favour of Commodore while Colombiana had performance as his strength though having been campaigned all over India, he was bound to have tired legs. This perhaps played a big role on the outcome of the race as Colombiana was way off the mark while finishing a poor third. The betting trend indicated equal support for Commodore and Colombiana. Jockey Trevor Patel had Commodore in front right from the start and comfortably held off the late rally of B Fifty Two. Colombiana who was of to a habitual late start, failed to produce the sparkling acceleration that he was known for and ended up a tame third.

Trainer Altamash Ahmed who has had a poor season with just one to his credit through Alaindair, added one more to his tally when the well-bred La Magnifique benefitted immensely by the forward run that she had and trounced the opposition to win the 1400 metres Karl Umrigar Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. The progeny of French Derby winner Shamardal justified the huge punt on the horse by having control of the race right from the start and bounced clear in the straight to go beyond the reach of the rest of the runners. Lady Be Good who was also in serious betting, was poorly positioned and her late charge even failed to get the runner-up berth from Man of Word by a whisker.

Trevor Patel who yet again was the star of the day, also guided A Siddiqui`s Jimbo to victory in the 1000 metres Sion F Nessim Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The eight-year-old Jimbo hadn`t won for 151 days but had come down in scales. His last run was suggestive. Trevor had Jimbo in front in a race where the jockeys were not allowed to carry the whip and the break that the fancied runner enjoyed was always difficult to bridge in such a scenario. Double Nine had a futile task of catching up with the front-runner. Fringe Benefit nosed out El Tycoon who failed to show the patented speed from the gates for the third position.

Dallas Todywalla trained Princess P won the 1000 metres Memories of You Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds, with a start to finish mission in the hands of jockey Trevor. Princess P came under intense pressure from favourite Gazino but Trevor was able to extract that bit extra from the front-runner to squeeze out a hard-fought win. Rishab`s Pet ran on to finish third.

Trevor, however, failed to get the same result on House of Commons in the 1200 metres D W Reid Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Arakawah led from the start but inside the final furlong, House of Commons came home with giant strides along with Magical Memory who was in chase of the front-runner from the start. House of Commons looked like landing the spoils but Arakawah and jockey Shrikant Kamble found something extra to pull off an exciting win. Irish Bailey beat Magical Memory to the third place.

After Mountbatten expended his energy by running freely in front, Streetjammer surged ahead but could not sustain the lead as favourite Miss Saigon launched a serious assault in the 1400 metres Cursetjee Dhunjishaw Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Miss Saigon got better in the shadow of the post. Benezeer showed intent but tapered off in the final stages of the race to occupy the third place.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Othello easily accomplished the task of winning the 2400 metres Jayant M Shah Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey J Chinoy had the favourite tracking Koal till approaching the 800 metres marker. Othello then smoothly cruised into the lead and broke clear of the rest to win the race with great deal of ease. Jager Bomb ran on well towards the close to take the second place ahead of Care Free who found foot when the cause had been lost.

Kasbekar trained Shivalik Skies brought off a big upset in the 1600 metres Manyatta Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Shivalik Skies came into contention with a strong run from way behind and shot ahead inside the final 100 metres. Star Ace essayed a strong challenge but Shivalik Skies managed to prevail by a whisker. Favourite Oscillation was third.
