Commander defies age, wins feature

By: Goldie Boy   March 29 , 2017

Trainer Vijay Singh`s new possession, Commander (Neeraj Rawal-up) recorded an easy victory over the Raunak Banerji-trained course favourite Evesham (Christopher Alford) in the 1,200m Midnight Cowboy Cup, Wednesday`s feature event. The afternoon also witnessed a good number of winners adopting the pillar-to-post mantra to gain advantage at the all important-end in the afternoon`s eight event card.

The distinct weight advantage helped Commander, a 13/4 shot in the betting, turn the tables on Evesham, considered to possess better sprinting abilities, compare to the winner for whom it was, perhaps, his first success in a 1,200m sprint.

The advancing age hardly proves as a stopper as the eight-year-old was right at the task, in close attendance of his speedy stable-mate, Zander (Shailesh Shinde); Gentle Knowledge (App. Ranidan Singh), Make Way For Me (Hindu Singh) and also the favourite; until 250m from home. Demonstrating good acceleration, about 150m from home, the race was all over for Commander as he shot into the winning lead.

Alford, atop Evesham, too, was held back his charge, alongside of Commander, but was hardly a match for the winner, leave alone the third placed Make Way For Me (Hindu Singh) who offered a stiff resistance for the second berth; which he, finally, lost in his last couple of strides.

Vijay and Neeraj also made a successful winning combination in the 1,400m Delhi Race Club Cup; which was an easy pick for a solidly fancied Setaflame. In his last outing, the China Visit son was an impressive second to his stable-mate, Drops Of Jupiter, therefore, it hardly came as a surprise when the wagering, from the right connections, followed in his direction, resulting in shrinking of his odds – 5/2 to 18/10.

Setaflame hardly gave anxious moments to his hoards backers as he followed the long time leader Acrider (Alford) till about a 150m from home, before making his winning run. Trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s No More Politics (Sandeep Rajput) was a good second in the race as he came with a threatening run, inside the last 250m, to easily knock out Acrider for the runner-up slot.

Jaiswal, however, fulfilled his daily quota of a brace of winners as the trainer`s long shot, Jacknief (Akash Rajput) came with a late dash to score in a four-horse pulsating finish, also involving Flanker (app. Ranidan) – who, too, covered as much ground – and the long time leaders – Romantic Flame and Shivalik Story, the 4/1 favourite.

Vikash`s popular choice, Born To Win (apprentice Nikhil Naidu) delivered the goods on the 13/4 favourite in the 1,100m Astre D`Or Handicap; in which the Senure son made every post a winning one.

The pillar-to-post formula was applied by trainer Javed Khan`s 13/4 favourite, New Challenge (B. Mahesh) in the curtain raiser itself and it continued for some time early in the afternoon. The extended trip of 1,400m Cheviot Handicap, suited the failed favourite, over 1,100m races, in his last three starts, to the hilt.

Trainer Arti Doctor`s Lucky Steak (app. R.S. Bhati), however, missed the upper division of the 1,200m Myall King Handicap by a whisker, while adopting similar tactics. The race was won by trainer Harvinder Bath`s 4/1 chance Glorious Run (Shezad Khan) who also came with a late dash to score in a desperately close finish.

If Lucky Strike failed narrowly, trainer Sarfraz Khan`s top-weighted runner, words (app. Ranidan) succeeded with a with ease while making every post of 1,200m journey a winning one in the lower division of the race.

Alford continues to fight tooth and nail for the championship honours with Dashrath Singh. The champion jockey drove home the advantage on trainer Sarfraz Khan`s heavily fancied runner, Rolly Polly, in the concluding event, the 1,400m Goolagong Handicap. The winning efforts on Rolly Polly brings Alford closer to the target as he is tied up with Dashrath at 23 winners apiece.
